RE: The Top

Hi and welcome. I'm guessing you mean the tip? Cape York?

Under the search icon in the blue tool bar above if you type in Heading to the tip? There is a good report in there.

We went last year and left our van at Laura. $4 a day on power (only couple of powered sights tho) . Roads were corrugated but very drivable. People did take vans and campers etc but we had so much dirt in the back of the BT we were glad we left van at Laura. It's with going. I'm sure you'll get lots of info. All the best!

Hi.
Where are you.
Going to. What season. and coast or inland.

ALL will make a difference.
and bush roads can be completely different from month\week to week.
Wet\dry etc.

Figure out when. and ask then for seasonal weather and condition averages..

Then closer to the time. Actual cond's from people actually there and on forums.

There is. As said . Lot's. of info. but people need to know. Mainly. When.

Have fun. and take two spare wheels for both or matching rims front and back.
then you'll get away with 3. if you going off bitumen much.
Plus a tube or two.
They take no room and can be very handy if you need one.
You do have a compressor. cheap or otherwise??.

I take a spray can of that inflator spray gunk too for emergency's.
So far. Preparation has overridden the needs for.

One flat in about 30 yrs. On Bitumin. T'ween Camoweel and the Corner.
About 14\15 yrs ago.

I always start a big trip with NEW tyres, Or not more than 1\4 worn.
and change any before they 3\4 worn. It's safer.
And if a 4wd. The full set. Incl Spare at a time.
Plus always rotate 5\6 wheels at a time. Every oil change myself (10000km)

A person doesn't want to be worrying about "will my tyres last"
2\3rds way round a lap when getting into dirt\corrugations. with van on back.

You can always keep in shed the 1\2 worn set you took off.

and put back on when this lot worn out and driving local.

I have set of H\T tyres on Mags for town work.

and a set of A\T on Steelies I put on for any long\van trips.

Both seem to last a lot longer that way.

Tyres are probably the primary thing to look after along with the servicing.
and FULL check over of both b4 start.

I have local van repairers go right through my van Inside and out b4 annual trip
Last one $165. 6 yrs ago. last time we used other van.
Bearings/Brakes/lights/gas/ int wiring/lights. Stove etc.
he lot.
Good peace of mind for any little thing YOU may miss
but could cause hair pulling further down the track.

RACQ Mag. normally has Beaurepairs page in there for free rotation for members
Infrequently, I haven't paid for either car in near 10 yrs.

Have fun.

This lot just in case you haven't had much practice at the longer legs.

Cape York is a great destination. Many conventional caravans make the journey, but the main road can be dusty and corrugated, especially after school holidays, so you may need to slow down to avoid damage.
The best time to set out for the last stretch beyond Laura (the end of the black top) is after the road is "Open to all traffic" for the first time after the wet (April - ish???). At that point, the road is dry and the grading is virtually freshly finished.

The ferry across the Jardine may seem expensive, but it includes unlimited free camping in the Aboriginal land to the north. The longer you stay, the cheaper it becomes.
There are some truly wonderful spots if you care to seek them out.
Don't constrain yourself in terms of time. Allow weeks, not days to explore and soak up the various areas.

Cheers,
Peter
