We stayed just over 12 months ago for an overnighter, amenities a little old but clean.

Would do it again as we also travel from Brisbane to the Central Coast a couple of times a year.

A little further on there is Broke. A free camp has a toilet a huge level area with shady trees which we like.

Stayed there now 6 nights over the last 2 years. Worth a look as it not far out of your way.

I would have thought that Broke was a fair way from the New England Hwy so coming from the south you would have to take the Golden Hwy turn off just before Singleton and backtrack down Broke Road. You could turn off the Hunter Expressway onto Lovedale Road and go out to Broke through Pokolbin and the vineyards but that's probably not a great way if you are pulling a van. From Wyee maybe it would be best to head up the back way to Wolumbi or Cessnock and then out to Broke via Payne's Crossing. When you are leaving heading north you can then use the Broke Road to the Golden Highway and back to Muswellbrook where you will pick up the New England Hwy. I have never towed a van on any of these roads but I have driven them plenty of times - I often take my car on the Lovedale Road which although fairly narrow is not too bad but when you get to the roads around Pokolbin especially heading out to Broke the surface can be very ordinary. I haven't been that way to Broke for a year or 2 so maybe they have done some resurfacing work.

Just thinking if you come from Wyee you would probably know all this anyhow.

I refuse to make a comment.

We did use this road before they built freeways.

Bulga in the Hunter has a very nice grassy large free camp, see it before the nearby coal mine destroys it and the rest of Bulga.

It is a great spot for overnight stops and just at the top end of the Putty Road and just off the New England highway.

As alternative instead of turning left following the signs to Singlton in Muswellbrook go straight ahead to Jerrys Plains here you find a sports ground with amenities after a night there head east on the Golden Valley Highway which will link up with Expressways on reasonable roads.

Sorry Radar I wasn't criticising your idea of staying at Broke but to me Broke seems a fair bit of a hike from the New England Hwy 34kms (63kms sidetrack). If they are coming from Wyee and went all the way to Muswellbrook before turning off it would add 155km to their trip. They would need to reverse your directions and turn off the New England at Whittingham south of Singleton onto the Golden Hwy heading for Denman then that would only add the same 63kms as you do when coming from Tamworth. The caution I gave about taking the expressway exit onto a secondary road like Lovedale is a bit further south near Greta and again was only intended for those heading north who may be tempted to take a shortcut through the vineyards. Can if you want but personally I wouldn't take a big van that way there are too many tourists to dodge as they enter or leave the cellar doors, restaurants, the Gardens, concerts etc. with my luck the Eagles or Fleetwood Mac would be playing up there on the day that I chose to go through .. Your comment about driving those roads before freeways were built - having lived in the Hunter region all my life so have I many times.

From the south - From the Whittingham turn off to Broke 34kms - Broke back to Muswellbrook 75kms - (The Singleton to Muswellbrook 46km comes off the total extra kms as you would have done them anyway using the highway ). From the north as Radar suggested you just do it in the reverse order.

If you don't want to save fuel by using the freeways you can always use the Putty or the Great North Road options to or from that area depending on what direction you're heading.

Agreed, it would be much easier to keep going through Muswellbrook to Willow Tree Rec Ground or  the First Fleet Gardens at Wallabadah if the show grounds don't suit. Showers and dunny for $10.

That's not a bad option Peter the choice will be for lyn-n-ken to decide if they want to stay on the New England Highway and do most of their travelling on the first day (Willow Tree option) or use secondary roads, travel 63kms further on the sidetrack and do the majority of the kms on the second day (Broke option). I don't want to get anyone offside so I'll have to refuse to make a comment on my preference. Too bad that the old Tank and Tummy hasn't got that turkey anymore they may have been able to pick up their dinner from there.

Sorry miss read his question regarding some where to overnight going the wrong way.

Best stay Muswellbrook, Willow Tree.

Wallabadah is good but for overnight transport noise and that rattling Bridge.

Thanks Guys for all that banter, we try to stay around half way if possible and only do around a couple of hours at a time, was going to stay at a friends in Muswellbrook but their moving,
have stayed at Nulkaba ,Broke and that area so now it and there all good.
Been on the road 6 years heading up country for awhile.
We like to see the little places in between and as well as the big towns, usually staying a couple of weeks or more, were never in a hurry, if you hurry you miss to much, all those good little nooks and crannies.
Once again thank you
and happy and safe travel to you all
lyn
