Free Camping with Dogs

Hi All

Just wondering what people have found when free camping with dogs. Do they generally keep them on a lead or let them wander at will?  I recently pulled into a free camp on the Murray & there was on old bloke in a van with a bull terrier x dog which was wandering around loose all over the place including in & around other people's camps.  I asked him if he was going to tie him up at all & was told a very gruff "No, he's a good dog & wouldn't hurt my dog" which I've heard before.  Not to mention any children or wildlife the dog may find interesting. I left that very nice camp & moved on for that reason.   I always keep my dog in my rig or on a lead unless we are at a beach, oval etc. & she's happy as long as she's with me or inside where she feels safe.  I don't even leave her tied up outside unless I'm around.

We always keep our dog on a lead. He's deaf now and couldn't hear even if we called him. 'Tis only good manners anyway.
We wouldn't let him poop and piddle over other people's campsite. Always clean up after him.
Some people think the rules don't apply to them and so spoil it for others

Thanks for your input. I haven't done much free camping but figure most people are responsible & that my experience was a "one of" hopefully.

I camped at Agnes Waters in Qld in 2016, near the library , a council run very cheap campground that had a dog friendly beach. Unfortunately there were a few of the type you describe, and when I said something after seeing a lovely goanna chased, was verbally abused by a group of them.
I mentioned it to the rangers when they came around to collect fees, but of course everyone knew what time the rangers came around and had their dogs tied up each morning.
It is a shame but you will encounter a minority of these types in your travels.

Thanks. Makes you wonder if their dogs would also go after your cute little Chihuahua too. I don't even mind loose dogs as long as they are really well trained & come when called no matter what they might be interested in but I get really angry when I see people like you encountered at Agnes.

I have a cute little chichuahua. She is always on her lead. She a little bit defensive if a dog comes near and will try to chase them away. Doesn't realise almost any other dog can bite her head off with one snap. I have had her inside with the door open on two occasions when a larger dog off lead has come in the van. Very frightening.

OMG that would have been frightening. She's gorgeous though & the trouble with Chi's is they think they're Alsations or Rotweilers. I've had 2 & they were both the same - very defensive if another dog came near.
