West Aussies versus mozzies

Informative and timely article on mosquitoes and protecting yourself - from the website of entomologist Dr Cameron Webb see this guest post by Dr Abbey Potter including the 'Fight the Bite' campaign:

An excerpt from the above blog post:

The Facts

On average, more than 1,000 people will be infected with a mosquito-borne disease in WA every year. Our mossies can transmit Ross River virusBarmah Forest virusWest Nile virus (Kunjin substrain) and Murray Valley encephalitis virus. All four cause diseases that are debilitating at best, causing weeks to months of symptoms. Murray Valley encephalitis is limited to the north of the State but is so serious it can result in seizures, coma, brain damage and even death.

Best to be forewarned and protect yourself!

Best thing I ever bought as a deterrent was OFF.
For midgies\sand flies.

and Mossies.
The US one we get with DEET (98.11% content) in it. "REPEL 100".

Says up to 10 hrs relief and is pretty close to it over there believe me.

With sand flies.
There is a solid wall of them when we go down to get outriggers from corner of beach.

The first time I walked down there. (12 of us. 2 crews)
and I walked along with a cloud of them forming a circle round my legs
but none touching me.

The whole club was converted.
Pump pack, spray on hand. wipe on skin Magic.

NOT so good on Mossies though.

Eating lots of lemons helps with mossies.

And then again. Some of us are just plain rotten.

They tend to keep away from me when anybody else near.

Di does her nana.... Why me and not you hey????.

Nice quiet Christmas everybody????.

They all think we in Canada. shhhhhhh.

As far as the mossies go, Gin and Tonic helps, particularly in large amounts, you don't even notice them biting! Seriously, drinking a couple of gin and tonics a day seems to keep them away for me! I figure it may be the tonic water, haven't tried it without the gin and not about to!
