G'Day Mike, my Territory is almost at 300,000km with a mostly original rear end - only tyres and brake pads and blades ever changed so I've often thought airbags would be good despite the Territory not seeming to drag it's rear end so I'd be interested in any replies or comments. My Avan is about 1300kg loaded so not a big weight. Rebound rubbers on back axle are still good which indicates to me the springs may still be good?

Regards

I upgraded my rear springs and fitted airbags after our first shake down trip. Have just arrived in Adelaide after a 3 day run which was excellent. Our terri carries full load which includes a twin set of draws, 50 litre waco fridge. Asorted tools, table and chairs and a couple of dozen wine.

Rebalanced the van load after the first trip as well even have more weight inside. Van weighs 1350kg and the front only raised 15 mm and satisfied with the level achieved.

One thing my mechanic told me after install and he tows himself was always pump the bags up after the van is connected. Most of the time we did not feal the van behind us and the ride was good. For me the combined upgrade of the rear end was worth the cost.

Not sure of the brand of bags used but from memory was not the same as you have used.

Interesting Comment CC bear re pump up after van is loaded. Everything I have read including the instructions for my Polyair bags on my Territory say inflate before adding weight. How do you find it works doing it your way.

If fitting airbags.

Go to a crash repair shop. (a good one)
and ask foreman if chassis rails need beefing up under airbag mounts.

SOME need reinforced rails front and rear of mounting plate
to stop point pressure loading when suspension working.

MOST Normal rails do NOT have reinforce for extra point pressure in that location
The next bent chassis will NOT be the first believe me.
Read up on it.

Firestone USED to have a terrible record a few yrs ago.

I always went stronger NOT stiffer coils and H\Duty shocks.
Soft when just driving and well supported\controlled when 3 ton van on back
with nice 2 in lift. Progressive coils.(NO good for 4WDing)
