Awning For Slide On

I know I have asked earlier about an annexe for my camper! It's not an annexe I am after though, it's an awning. My slide on sits high off the ground when it's on my truck, approx 9ft. My question is does anyone know what type of awning would have legs long enough to suit? It would have to be a wind up because I can't reach the top of the door, even when I am standing on the tray. Not really interested in taking the camper off the tray when I camp. Unless I will be there for a long stay. I would appreciate any suggestions please.

This mob seem to have the best prices for a bagged type awning - If you fitted a permanent rail to top side of slide on unit that could have a set of hooks or something that you could put back rail of awning on and off www.emgstore.com.au/daily-deals/adventure-kings-2-5-x-2-5m-awning.html

When I needed an extra awning for my off road camper I attached a board with several hooks I stapled Heavy duty Velcro tape (male) to outside of board and matching (female) on awning needed to have small kitchen steps to reach top and put on or off. It was very successful and withstood major wind events without detaching - sorry don't have now to take photos.

Thank you for your reply Possum. I am happy for any advice on this subject that I can get. My biggest problem is that I can't reach the top of the door to pull out or attach anything while the camper is on the truck. I have added a picture of my camper. The top of the door would be approx 11ft off the ground & about 7ft off the tray so being that I am only 5ft 2" I can't reach the top of the door off the tray. It would have to be a wind out & the legs would have to extend to reach the ground.

Hunny, What about these fiesta awnings; note the ones pictured are on a Fifth Wheeler so should be more than adequate for little ol you. www.ebay.com.au/itm/Carefree-Fiesta-Wind-out-Awnings-Silver-Shale-Fade-Colour-Only-Variable-Siz-/272353471280

I have seen awnings with a long handled winder. I think it was a Fiamma brand.
Hope this helps.

Your rig is no taller than most motor homes, a caravan repair shop should be able to give you guidance.

Why not fit a ladder up side of camper.
Get to awning?. and rack on top with light stuff if needed??.
Or carry a household 5 rung step ladder.

Hi, I have a motorhome of the same type as yours and it is fitted with an awning that has a long handled winder. There's a small hook on one end of it and it fits into a ring on the awning and all you have to do is wind it either up or down. The winder looks a bit like one of those old crank handles for starting early model cars. When down, you can attach the legs to the motorhome or have them standing straight up with tent pegs holding them down. I think mine is a Fiama and it's very easy to use, hope this helps.

Cheers,

Annie

Sorry Hunny Bunny, I didn't mean to say you were a giant what I meant was that these repair shops would guide you to the one that suits you, your purpose and your slide on best. A few years ago when I had a motor home, Absolute Caravan Repairs in Perth gave me a couple of different options and I got what suited me best first go.

Just trying to be helpful, thats all.

Thank you Brian! I really didn't mean anything by my comment! Accept to say that I am a shorty. I appreciate your response. :)

I don't know if it is just the angle of your photo but it would appear your door would be a problem with the roof of an awning- might be a good idea to check the angle an awning will roll out & still miss the door when you open it.

If it is a problem then you could consider just an awning lower down from the overcab to the door opening.

David

I have seen on my travels, where people fit a roller (like the castor roller of a chair), on top of their door, so that they do not damage the awning, as they open and close the door

Hope that this info is helpful to you

Edit to say that I have found one on this Australian website below

Thank you David. I have also considered that this could be a problem. Will find out soon! I am going to take it in & talk to the pro's. I was thinking of a Fiamma 45 wind out awning. The guys at the caravan repairs & accessories will steer me in the right direction I'm sure. I appreciate the feed back.

Had my camper measured up today for an awning. Seems I would be looking at a Fiamma65 because, as we had mentioned , ( thank you David) there is not enough clearance above the door so it will have to go on the roof. Then we have two more problems! Firstly can I get the width I need? ( yet to be determined) Secondly will I be able to reach the awning to fold the legs out? I think I can do that as long as they are centered above my door! So I have to wait to firstly find out if they make them in the width required.

My Fiamma 45 looks like the Fiamma 65, it has the legs in the part which comes out to you

The second part of the question is, yes you will be able to reach the legs

With the door closed, I wind it out until the end comes to me, then I can unhook the legs, ensure the canvas is higher than the door, and then secure the legs
