Does anyone have any dos and don'ts for claiming insurance on a damaged van. We were hit badly this weekend. Awning completely ripped off with a chuck of side, two windows blown right off van. We were planning heaps of camping trips including road trip over new year and thinking we will have to cancel. We fit the windows back on as best we could with tape and drove home slowly. I heard this can take months to fix via insurance. Any ideas welcome thank you Cath
Cath .When I managed to rip the side out of my van on a post and rail fence in a caravan park I firstly rang the manfacturer and asked if they also repaired vans .I explained our problem and they said ring the Ins co and get a claim number, then ring them back. They then said bring the van in and an assessor would ring us with a date to inspect the van {7days later}approval was given 4 days later and work began 3 days later .In essence it was a 3week period. Mind you when we wrecked the van ,we managed to duct tape and screw the van to a waterproof and still useable van albeit very bent !So we continued on our entire holiday and did not even ring anyone till we got home. Why bugger up a trip that we planned for a long time !Since in our case everthing still worked.Cheers. [ we were with CIL.and were very happy and Supreme were also fantastic ]

Take as many photo's as you can with date on photo.
I think most Insurance Co's are very helpful depends on who you are with but my dealings with CIL after i had hit a Kangaroo was very reassuring, even rang me next day to see how I was!!
Wow - glad you guys are okay. Could have been a lot worse then.
Reassuring to see two positive comments re CIL - we have only ever used them for a windscreen, and then they were prompt and efficient. Glad we are with them.

No 1. Wollongong storm wrecked the dometic awning. Rang the insurance company to let them know but explained we would not do anything until we returned home approx 6 weeks time.
No problem, they had weather report stating storm in area on that date and time. In the end on our return the repair was carried out smartly.
No 2. Back home in Brisbane hit by a storm with hail damage. In this instance there was extreme amount of damage done and I was one thousands, with no immediate plans we left up to the insurance company who kept us informed by regular emails. From the last days of November to last days of February for the repairs to be carry out, the biggest problem was the Christmas/new year closing and aluminium siding not being available till late January.
It was a good out come considering the $11000 damage. except for the damage to the plastic vents which I tarped up the caravan was still road worthy.
I can not speak high enough of RACQ insurance and there Personal in this stressfull period.
We recently had our awning replaced by CIL, $200 excess and a day out of the van and bingo, nice new awning. We tie down the roller, support the underside with rafters and strap the top diagonally against high winds. Works a treat as we have the annex up.
Hope everything works out for you.
Cheers
