Hi all, am travelling west in June next year and wanted to do mostly free camping. Can anyone recommend a good site to use, also has oneone benough cheeky enough to camp off road that isn't a designated camp site? Thx
Hi - and because I haven't spoken to you before (I don't think) - welcome to the forum glad to see you participating!
As to your question - if you go to the Free/Budget Camp Sites on this very forum - and go to WA you will find a myriad of helpful posts - nothing like first hand info. Not sure where you are coming from, but heaps of places across the Nullarbor, as well as in SA on the way over - most of these would have been reviewed in there. Have your maps or camps book handy, so you can check the places out, as you do your planning.
If you are going to be over there late September/early October, keep an eye out on this forum again, the Get Togethers section, we MAY be having a meet up at Seabird again (hopefully).
A place I loved south of Perth, was Point Heron - think it was about $7 night, toilets, and some water, right on beautiful beach on a river.

Wiki Camps is an excellent app available on both Android and Apple the cost is just $8 installed on your smart phone and well worth it, it's updated constantly by users of the app, there is no need to be connected to the internet while you use it, as you can download the database before you leave home and then just update now and then when on Wi Fi.
A 2 week free trial is available if you want to try it before paying.

Lots of places to pull up for a night some are gazetted free camps with limited facilities..may have a long drop loo and a picnic table and others are just graded areas off the road, some are close to the road so if you are a light sleeper avoid them but places like gravel pits,side roads and tracks often have a wide spot to park over night.
We host the Seabird Get together but we often have travellers calling thru for a night or more all thru the year. Anyone want to get off the road over the Christmas New Year period is welcome to stop here. As Jules said Check out the Seabird thread in Get togethers and that will tell you a bit about where we are etc.
As others have already said, there are plenty of free camps
When crossing the Nullarbor, you can virtually stop anywhere, except outside a caravan park
I am fully self contained, and when travelling from A to B, I have in the past stopped, just off the road, for the night
But... I do not advertise this fact, by putting the washing out, or setting up the sat dish
If there is a free camp nearby, then that is where I go
I plan my longer stops of more than an overnighter, to be in a free or low cost camp
In my opinion, so I could be wrong, paying for a low cost camp, is financially cheaper than being fined for camping in a day time only area
I highly recommend KIMBA in South Australia - free camp - there is a box for donations, and I always donate - toilet, water, dump point, and coin for a hot shower
As a side note, I always purchase something in the small towns, which have a free camp nearby, to help the finance of those towns When the free, and low cost camps are no longer around, then I would probably not be able to afford, to use caravan parks

Another great free camp is in Minnipa SA. Just on the edge of the town. Some interesting rocks to spend a day driving to and looking around.
We went from WA to NT to Qld and then NSW SA and back to WA in 2015 and found Wikicamps had lots more sites and info than the Camps Book.
In WA you have to book most National Park camps sites on line- which can be a pain when travelling around without a set timetable! Having said that the govt has recently spent a lot of money in installing new camp kitchens / toilets etc.

Thnaks for the reminder Treecrest14 - Minnipa is the home of Pildappa Rock - about 16k out of town - goodlittle free camp, climb (easy) up to the top, the view is endless - long drop loo - there is a bbq, but never had any gas in the bottle when we were there.
When you get to western side of the nullabour a stay at fraser range station to fill the water tanks and charge the batteries it`s a great stop with great food and its a working station also a lot of history,as water is not available across the paddock unless you buy it ,mike g
