Peak Downs Hwy

We are planning to go to Mackay area coming from the NT in Feb next year, towing the van and I know nothing about this area or road conditions  is it flat hilly narrow and would it be ok for our old Pajero with 16 foot pop top behind? all answers greatly appreciated... Bru

Just read about the Hwy on Wiki Pedia turned me off too much heavy vehicle traffic on narrow road. So I'll guess we will go by Charters Towers and Townsville... Sometimes the internet is wonderful.

We travelled that way in August and September good road and not to much traffic, it was hilly in places and a steep descent/ ascent on the eastern side of the ranges. We were towing a 3200kg van with a Jeep grand Cherokee with no problems. I would much rather it than the Bruce Highway

Regards

John

Peak Downs Highway - I don't think much of that description. Looks like it was written to keep timid and incompetent drivers off that stretch. There may be a few cowboy drivers along it at shift change time but that's not when you will be driving it. It was a full two lanes wide when I drove it. Some people think that a road is narrow when there is not much in the way of shoulders at the sides of a standard two lane width bitumen road.
