The Kiwis are safe.

Lorraine and I are quite safe after the earthquakes over here. At our house in Hamilton we were woken in our bed just after midnight. Lorraine said, "earthquake". Brandt thought she was rocking the bed and didn't take much notice. Then she put the light on. The vertical blinds were swaying back and forth. The house was creaking and something was banging outside. And the bed was really rocking and rolling, and for those of you with such minds - it was the earthquake! We reckon it went on for over a minute. I had a stack of landscaping timber outside and some of that fell over - and we are 600km (as the crow flies) from the epicentre. We got up, had a cup of tea, and watched tv for an hour or so. Nothing was on tv, but social media was very busy. We have felt no after shocks up here . Brandt and Lorraine.

Good to hear the Kiwis are safe. Well done on your brief report - and the common sense approach in "having a cup of tea"

That's good to hear.
I wonder how long it will take for all those land slides to be cleared down the coast.
They look massive.

The landslides down the coast certainly are massive. Tonight the prime minister said he thinks it will take months and months to clear them.

The section of collapsed road I have seen in the photos and on the news looks like the coastal highway just north of Kaikoura where the little caravans set up to sell their crays. Probably lucky that this quake happened just after midnight and not in the daytime when there would have been more people travelling on that road.

That's a major road. How would you get to Christchurch from the ferry if you were driving. Are there alternative routes?

There are inland routes and road gangs are working hard to get them open

Good to hear you are both OK and I assume your family is also OK as you never mentioned that.

Now, are you sure it was the earthquake MrK? Until you mentioned it, I would never have thought that way at all and I tell you that for free.

My Bro in Orini ( north of Hamilton) Said his bed hasn't moved like that for some time . To make it even funnier . His Mrs said its been a lot longer since it went that long !! Lol The major trouble is electricity to milk cows as it's the flush dairy season . Plus the tankers are having issues getting to these farms .. Some of these farms milk over 1000 cows ! That's a hell lot of milk wasted ! NZ takes it in their stride and get things done .. The help from Aust over there is much appreciated!!
