I would have thought the existing fuel tank would be the best option, not having to fill another small tank etc.
Surely the fuel supply to your heater could be plumbed in.
My heater came with a suction tube that could be fitted to any tank, way to go.

I THINK mine is T'd into the diesel return line . It's off the bottom
By 30mm so it cannot use all the fuel . 300 litre tank . IMO it's just an excuse !! Another way is to run a line down the breather to tank ?
The Mercedes Guy said don't do it cos you can lose power from your engines fuel line
if not done properly and didn't recommend I should do it.
This Diesel Mechanic i was put onto from another mechanic,
Made a note about the importance of not letting air into fuel tank.
This was something that I feared with others that said they would have a crack at doing it. Said he had done these before and it is an easy job. Thanks ...I'll get back to you all ... Chucker....
Still nervous though cos this is my Baby.....:)

Pretty sure the mechanic was cautioning about getting air into the supply line for the engine, possibly causing issues re trapped air in lines needing to be bled out.

Yesterday I was talking to Graeme at Dieselheat about fitting a diesel heater to our campervan also and mentioned that I thought it was possible to insert a T piece in the fuel line. He said no-way that the fuel line is under pressure for the common rail diesel and he does not recommend it. When asked about inserting a pickup into the fuel tank he explained that removing the tank from the sprinter is a big job.
His recommendation was to fit a 5 litre tank under one of the bunks. His set up which is purpose built includes a removable tank in a tray, there is no smell or risk of spill.
If you Google Dieselheat or you can go to there website at www.dieseheat.com.au for a lot of information.
He has done a few sprinters and was a wealth of information, we think we will pay the extra and get him to fit ours professionally as there appears to be a lot of traps. I want our heater unit fitted under the floor, he makes a nice aluminium box for this to be done.
