We left Brisbane early August with one of our missions to follow and camp along the mighty Murray. Alas!!! when we arrived at Albury / Wodonga we sort of expected that the news would be .....NO CAMPING ON THE MURRAY. So a change of plans, we are now going to visit the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide and then we now intend to travel the Murray in January. Soooooooooooo.............. now Can anyone give me the best estimates of the expected levels of the Murray River towards the end of January 2017. Now let's assume that we do not experience any further flooding. Plus given that the snow melting waters from the high country will be part of the equation for the next month or so. What are our chances of experiencing the Murray in January.
I can offer one example. My family has a caravan in a park on the Murray at Tocumwal. You have to drive 3 or 4 km beside the river to access the park.
During the peak their park was stranded like an island, only access via boat. It was on the news , Time Out CPark. Residents were marooned and patrons couldn't get in for weeks.
ANYWAY access was allowed again on Cup Weekend. Water has retreated back towards the river and things are getting back to normal. Plenty of debris floating of course. But fishing off the banks etc was good.
I'd THINK that you could easily plan a holiday along the Murray and just as you suggested call into the info centre for more local knowledge. Nature is amazing, it sorts itself out quickly, usually!!
cheers Dianne

I would advise that you also check the Great Ocean rd as there has been a few land slips and road closures I believe. Safe travel which ever way you go. Cheers

Robinvale caravan park is under water as at today and murray is slowly going downstream, so maybe by then it will be ok
Depends if there is more rain

If we dont have torrential rain, it " should " be at normal high irrigation levels. You might also try Murray Darling Basin Commission. They are planning an " Environmental Flood " at some stage. They claim in today's Herald Sun that it will not be as high as the current event, but will still be significant and waste a lot of valuable water. They forget that the river has been almost dry on a number of occasions since the 1860's due to Mother nature. A large water release from Hume Dam near Albury Wodonga must take at least 3-4 weeks to get to other end ( could be corrected on exact time). Vic Roads also announce major works on a landslip area on Gt Ocean Rd today. Must be a way around it though.

The Murray River & the Great Ocean Road are packed to the rafters in January. If by some miracle you manage to find a spot be prepared for the 24/7 sound of partying, speed boats & jet-skis along the Murray. After record rains the mozzies are waiting for you to arrive, don't forget the repellent! We've been in the area in the past few weeks & the supermarket shelves are empty, bring at least a dozen large cans with you. The GOR is totally booked out months ahead for the January school holiday period. There are virtually no free camping areas along the whole stretch. The Murray River water levels would have returned to near normal by January though the adjacent red-gum forest may still have lots of grey clay, deep boggy tracks.

As a frequent camper on the Murray River I would say that Desert Dweller has given you some sound advice. I don't think the water level will be as much as a concern as the Mozzies & the holiday makers. If you know the spots it can be quieter though.
