Last year we did Victoria and New South Wales in April ,May and June , This year North Queensland in October and November , And found it much better plenty of free camps and caravan parks , Still people traveling but not has many country looking great with the change of season .
We did Tenterfield / Bourke area (about 4 weeks) in June. The weather was crap on a few occasions. The park at Tenterfield had an all-weather camp kitchen complete with TV, wood heater and every cooking device required. At 3:30 - 4:00pm every day it was afternoon tea (tea, cheese, cake, beer) and light-the-fire. Had the best 3 nights we have ever had. 20-30 people in the kitchen every night. The nights in Tenterfield were there worst for weather and best socially.
In the other parks where is was fine but cold, it's marvellous how a campfire becomes a social hub. At Glenlyon, even the roos came and shared the campfire.
Visited "Stone Henge" at Glenn Innes on a very miserable morning. Co-incidently it was the Winter Solstice and the miserable weather just made the visit so spooky. Some sort of (pagan?) festival had just finished.
Only problem was that we did have to book at some of the parks on the highways because of the number of nomads going north. Massive numbers going up the Carnarvon, Castlereagh & Kidman Highways.
