I don't think it matters much on my Landy as its got the aerodynamics of a Brick. Built my toy box on the top which contains my surfboard, SUP, Outrigger stuff etc. then I put an outrigger on top of that!! I still get 9-10l per 100kms for the last 10 yrs so not complaining. How does it affect the handling?....well, it's a Landy so not much at all. :)
I see some pretty big sails on 4WD drives . Would have thought tinny upside down on roof almost a fuel saving with a little storage room under them ., seen Gerry cans right up the front . Mind weight has to be considered no matter where it is fuel consumption wise .,

A rack under the tinny can be used for extra storage.
Just remember.
a rack/loader weighs approx 25/30+ kg.
Decent Tinny another, around 75/85kg.
MOST roof loadings are maxed at 100kg.
Mostly with rack and boat you at or over limits.
NOT a good idea to load more on top.
I carry boat and rods in tube on top.
Motor. and ancilliaries, fuel tank etc inside. with 80ltr Waeco. tools. cat and bits.
That's it. loaded.
You don't get much to play with with the vehicles avail to register in this country.
Without going Commercial.
My Patrol went 3.2 ton on average. Over Scales.
with 2.6/2.7ish ton van behind. Empty water tanks.
Not much room for anything else.
And bare minimum variation in weights between the two for safety.
Normally around 1\2 a ton .
When you looked at others on road. with similar rigs.
And what they loaded with.
You KNEW... they were well over weight.
Once the Scalies get serious on the road.
A LOT will be parked on side of.
People NEED to get into gear now. before it starts costing them money

Yep you know it Macca, it drives like a pig on the bitumen but it sure does make me look good off road. Mind you I mainly use the 4wd to get me to nice campsites these days. I've had this one for over 20 years and it's still going strong, owes me nothing. My Landy is the Coolest thing about me. :)
You've got to remember those original Land Rovers. were designed for 45MPH Max.
Anything more was deadman only down the mountains. and over the paddocks at the bottom.
Confortable as, up to 35mph. over that. pot luck.
White diesel in tank under driver.
Red "gasoil under passenger seat with fuel line round back of engine to fuel pump to fool the highways tax blokes.
PS for Aussies. White diesel = road tax payed, fuel.
Gas oil. dyed red. was tax free fuel for machinery. farmers and boats.
Anything off road.
We mostly used gas oil in separate tanks.
Kept some legal fuel in main tank for when they dipped it for testing.
