CARAVAN CARNAGE ON QUEENSLAND HIGHWAY

A TRAVELLER was taken to hospital after a spectacular crash involving a caravan in Queensland. Witnesses described the scene near Torbanlea as "carnage". It is believed a 4WD crossed to wrong side of Bruce Highway and smashed into a caravan being towed in the opposite direction at about 1.45am.  one person was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital with minor injuries. The Jayco Silverline caravan was demolished. The driver of a semi skidded into the debris, just clipping the 4WD.

BTW I didn't say it was right or wrong I just asked who does. I am sure if for some reason you had to you would.
Myself I prefer to leave the road to trucks at night.

Written english can be confusing.... was it on the right side of the road as in the correct side keeping to the left, or was it on the right side as in being the opposite of left side???

Nothing confusing about the original post "...It is believed a 4WD crossed to wrong side of Bruce Highway and smashed into a caravan being towed in the opposite direction..."
Certainly made a mess of the caravan but luckily no one was killed. Brenda.

Carnage I think usually means the killing of a large Number of people.   I was expecting to hear of a few people dead.    But anyway  nobody actually died, I hope they recover from any injuries.   Just shows how your life can be changed in seconds.

MOST Times It Does NOT Take seconds Elliemike , mine changed in less than a 1/100 , yes a one-hundredth of a second.

There was noting I could do , not even any reaction time.

As we know , the trick is . Not to get in precarious situations to start with.

Be Careful folks . I have two friends that are grieving . I don't want to read any more here.

Holy Moses Poor buggers imagine if it was your caravan

As Jebs quoted " I guess they had good reason to be towing at that time ....or they wouldn' be there "

Likely thinking it was safer to drive at night as there is not much traffic on the road
I really feel for the people

I tow when I feel like it, adjusting my driving style to suit the conditions. Some people think we should all be like them, like sheep...towing daytime only. There are many reasons why someone might be towing at 2am. A family illness is but one.

EIGHT Times in the Last year . I have towed my van After midnight.

Might be Because I was an Interstate Truck Driver for over Forty years. Just had 5 days in Canberra in my van.

Sun 4/9/16 Left Canberra at 1930 (that's 7:30pm) , topped up , fuel , coffee & snack @ Uncle Leo's @ 2230/2300.

Another coffee Caltex N/bound Wyong @ 0045/0100 . Stopped @ 12mile rest area 0200 to 0545 pedalled on home.

Yes . I was on a mission . Get through Sydney , at quietest time , get past Hexham at quietest time .

BUT . Had to stop for a "nanny nap" just south of Coffs with 70k to go .

Before I retired I knew plenty of shift workers who would be met by the wife and family straight after their last afternoon shift with either the boat or van in tow. After working a full shift I would like to think that the partner was going to be doing most of the driving but in reality that was probably not the case. I worked in Tomago just north of the Hexham bridge for 34 years I fully understand why people would try and get through that area late at night in peak holiday periods.

Those who need to get places unexpectedly. I have had an occasion where I received late afternoon news that my mother was in hospital gravely ill. We left Beenleigh at around 1930, had a long sleep rest south of Grafton and arrived in Lane Cove late afternoon. We had a few other long rests along the way as well

Ex truckie.

The highways are a lot safer after dark when most cars are off them.

MOST truckies are going a to b and know to to blend safely.
Generally travelling at same speed.

Which is one of the major problems in daylight traffic.
Multiple types of veh's, at various speeds.
Hard to plan ahead for very long.and you never know which idiot is going where,
half the time.

You don't realise how stupid.blind. aggressive. Most car drivers are.
Till you get up in a cab and spend a month behind the wheel.
Half of them in this country. Mainly city drivers.
shouldn't have licences.

I nearly always travel at night when going any distance..
Apart from hoppers and cattle. it's a lot easier to see what's ahead and coming.

Just find a truck travelling at your speed.
Tuck in behind. AFTER chatting.
and he'll tell you if /when stopping. slowing, turning off.
Just not too close in case he bumps a hopper or two
and one goes under his bar.

Hi, just last Friday afternoon we were travelling that exact road. We were travelling at 90-95 and a rig passed us at least at 120km/h. Ok it was a 110 zone but far out was that van wagging its tail. He was passing everything in sight and all we saw was the van extremely unstable disappearing. Miraculously we didn't come across him in a ditch.
What is it with people that they have to be "better" than everyone else and be in front? Personal insecurities?
I don't get it. We love chilling, taking our time and being safe. I have nothing to prove to anyone.
We slow in overtaking lanes for people to pass and if way congested behind, pull over for a break. I don't think people realise how a small error of judgement can ruin not just your day but a whole trip or even the rest of your life.
Be safe out there people.
Al

I saw no carnage, what I saw and read about was an unfortunate accident in which one person suffered minor injuries.

carnage
knd/
noun
noun: carnage
the killing of a large number of people.
"the bombing was timed to cause as much carnage as possible"

Thankfully no one was killed, if it had happened a split second before, it could have been a head on collision

Hello Alfromoz

May I be one of the first to welcome you to the forum

When I see travellers driving erratically, I sometimes wonder if they actually hate travelling, and just want to get it over with, as soon as they can

Thankfully most travellers I see, are usually laid back, and enjoying the journey

I worked shift work for near on 27 years driving trains and I don't like driving on the roads at night, Why because I hit the biggest kangaroo I could find at around midnight first day with Coaster. Had a few close calls with roos going to golf tournaments towing a golf cart at dawn. So for that reason alone I don't like travelling at night. Also in my case there is no point doing it as I enjoy the scenery.

I have been watching lately the Youtube clips on the TV of dash Cam close calls and gee it frightens you how many idiots are out there, Even truck drivers in B-Doubles. Made me think twice about driving at all, But I will.

Just be safe on the roads and be courteous

Allan
