terracan

Hi, any diesel terracan owners towing a big van with a auto transmission, and had any dramas? We have a manual terracan diesel pulling our 22ft van and it does it magnificently, but the bride wants a automatic, If we do buy another tow vehicle it will have to be another terracan because we are so impressed with it's performance and economy.

regards, Fred.

Welcome to the gang Fred, enjoy here and out in the playground.

If you go with Auto it will more than likely have 'Selective Shift' meaning you can take control manually when you want or need. I have it in my Collie and take control myself when towing my 20' van.

By the way, I wouldn't attempt the 'Great Alpine Road' you talked about in another thread. Done it plenty of times without van on back though.

Keep safe on the roads and out there.

They are a nice car. My FIL wrote one off and settled for a Captiva petrol for a replacement and isn't happy paying for the much larger fuel bill.

Hi Fred,
Just curious as I looked for all sorts of tow vehicles in the past, you tow a 22 foot van with the Terracan, no doubt a good car but the van must be a featherweight, my impression was that the max braked tow weight on that car was 2500kg??
Cheers Vince

Howdy Fred

Had my auto for eleven yrs  with only one prob recently.just back in July after 3mths in WA and the viscous coupling failed in Leonora. Cost us several days awaiting parts from Perth. I would not part with it as have done a lot of mods to it - swing out carrier, roofrack, drws, chipped etc and yes the allowable tow weight is 2500kgs but only legal if fitted with Trek-n-Tow otherwise 2000kgs.

regards  end-on.

Hi Vince, yes the Terracan has a tow capacity of 2500kgs, our van is a 1995 Regal and it tares in at just under 2200kgs, I suspect with all the gear onboard it would go over the 2500kgs, but I really do not want to know about that. The terracan handles it effortlessly and returns a fuel figure of around 15 litres/ 100ks sitting on around 90-95 kph. It has done nearly 300,000 ks and is still a great little car to drive. The bride likes it because it does not feel like a big 4wd and is easy to park under woollies., my only complaint would be, they don't make them any more.. We used to tow the van with a converted Toyota bus turned into a ute to carry my boat, but it was doing about 28 litres/100ks which made it a bit expensive to travel on a budget. I have attached a picture of it with the same van.

regards, Fred

ps. sorry about the size of the picture, I am still learning how to drive this computer..kays work.jpg

That's fine Fred if it's illegal don't worry about it after all what's the worst thing that could possibly happen? Oh I know you could jack knife the van and kill a young family coming in the opposite direction!

Hi Freddy F

trek n tow was an optional suspension offered by Hyundai to increase handling and tow loading. It comprised different coils and edelbrock shocks, which were also repairable and/or re-rateable.I was fortunate to know someone @H so cost was nil but it was a tad exxy @ about $2000 from a dealer.

end-on

The problem is Freddy, just over or a lot over, the towing of 2500kg+ is not legal with your Terracan. That is the position, no matter what you feel re how the vehicle handles it.

Most vehicles will handle the tow limit, but it has been imposed by the manufacturer for a reason, that being they consider it to be the maximum safe continuous load the vehicle can handle. It is that figure that the law and insurers go by.

So, if you have an accident (and they can happen), you would/will be in all kinds of bother.
