Ron-D,

Use a broker, not an agent.

Know where your coming from Ron I went on line got several quotes then went back to our insurer still on line got a quote $200 cheaper used same figures so apples for apples then I rang them asked for the on line quoted price on our exsisting policy no deal. So took out a new policy same company $200 cheaper and let the other lapse just doen,t make sense to me.

Don't know about others or pricing.

But been with RACQ for yrs. Everything combined.
Never a problem and even the Cyclone damage.
THEY came to me and told me what needed repairing/replacing.
(More than we'd seen)

I think reputation is better indicator than pricing.

Western QBE were very good too. But down South.

One Marine claim. plus one car accident 35yrs ago.
They just told me to replace items at my choice of agent. They rang agent
and I just signed for items.

Any small items under around $4/500 we just pay ourselves.

Not worth the paperwork and reductions

Last year my house and contents were less than the year before and that was with AMMI. This year I will be checking a few others and see what we can do.

We found with our insurance was sneaking up also.

After discussion with the on line rep we found our replacement value of our home had been going way past its replacement value and this was also the same with contents value.

After bringing those 2 back to a realistic figure instantly we had a figure below the previous year.

Eg. Contents $120 000 we dropped that to $80 000

       Home $490 000 we dropped that to $390 000.

We believie in our area we would be able to buy a home for around the high $400 000, we also never realized the insurer was raising these values each year, we were being caught out as we were fairly busy over the last 3 years when it was due and it ws just being paid.

So my warning is check your values.

If the value of your property is say $500,000 the value of the dwelling is what needs to be insured, not the value of the land. To be simple if you buy a property insure the improvements not the land. After a fire the and is still there.

We went through the same deal a week ago - YOUI increased our house/contents from $1000 to $1300.....I queried this but no go. So them had a look online and found the first one (RACQ) gave a better policy than YOUI for $815. Didn't bother looking any further. No doubt this is a 'honeymoon' rate and will increase next year, then I look for another company.
Thats with house $390,000 and $100,000 contents $500 excess.

Good Luck.

The mistake you are making is that your house is not insured for market value, but replacement cost, you would need to allow about $12,000 to $15,000 per square for replacement cost.

Go through a broker, they will give you the correct information and price, don't try to do something you are not qualified to do.

Ex insurance broker.

They suck in with a cheap first year then hope you don't notice big increases after that.

Insurance

G'day Grey Nomads, Eddie here from New Zealand, My insurance did exactly the same, every year it went up and up, so at the end i canceled all my insurances and have only 3rd party on my car, you can say,''but IF your house burns down'', ok ok but how often do you do that ??, or how often does that happen? well i have taken that risk and saved myselve sofar in the last 2 years over 3000 dollars, it is money i can spend better than on something that might happen. Greetings, Eddie.

Then if your house burns down you are just left with the block of ground, yes its worth something, but I couldn't start over again to rebuild it wouldn't be possible for us to get a loan at our age.
We insured our house and contents with Coles, cost was half what we were paying GIO has been one renewal since and only a very small increase in line with inflation so quite happy the insurer is Wesfarmers now a part of the NRMA stable.
Cheers
David

G'day ''Roving Dutchy'', Insurance is all ''IF'' , and that is what they are after. but as i said 'how often does a house burn down ?. Here in NZ we are not as vulnerable as in Aussie i think, My place is on the East Coast of the North Island and the end of my garden is the ''Hawkes Bay'', so i am more prone to flooding. 'IF'' anything happens here, the insurance companies try to wriggle themselves out of any payments they have to make, like the people in Christchurch after the earthquake 5 years ago, lots of the victims are still waiting for the payout and will only get a part of the value of their property, so like i said '' i rather spend it on other things''. This is from an other ''Dutchy''.....lol Greetings, Eddie.

Have always had excellent service and prices from RAA.
Just as an aside, I have no problem wit anyone who chooses not to insure as long as they do not cry to everyone when it turns pear shaped.
I am so over hearing reports on the media that a house burnt down, lost everything and had no insurance, then expect others to chip in for them.
Eddie, you have already saved $300 and I hope all goes well for you and you do not ever have needed that insurance.
I do not want to live in that hope for me, and so insure house, 2 cars, van with RAA, have full medical and hopefully waste several thousands a year on it all.

G'day Hewy54, Thank you for your input and advice, i hope it never happens to me or anyone else for that matter that we need insurance, but i have saved myselve not 300 but over 3000 dollars by not insuring my house and contents, after i have the new bathroom installed and new carpet allround i will think about insurance again. I had a bad expirience with insurance last year with our motorhome, we were parked at a realy nice spot by a river and it was a realy sunny and calm day, but there was a wind-gust and ripped off the awning, the end result was 3 big holes in our motorhome, it was fully insured and went home to make a claim but they refused to pay cos they recon it was an ''ad-on'' and not part of the van,so you see, thats what i have against insurance companies, i did not know what else to do but cancel the whole ruddy lot, and by what i have saved, i can get the van fixed next year and a new awning put on. Thanx again and greetings, Eddie.

We had Coles insurance for the wife's car. But have since met a few people who were very disappointed and upset with Coles service when they had to claim. None of them have renewed with Coles

I think A Current Affair or Today Tonight did a piece on Coles insurance in the past few months
