We have been away 9 weeks travelling from Sydney, Broken Hill, Port Augusta up the Stuart Hwy to Katherine then through the Kimberkey to the West coast. From Port Hedland we have come down the Great Northern Highway through the Pilbara and tonight we are in Sandstone.
We have stayed in lots of caravan parks, spent tonnes of dollars (especially in Broome) but my most enjoyable stays have been in Rest Areas.
Two amazing spots are Albert Tognolini and Mt Robinson rest areas on the Gt Northern Hwy near Karajini National Park. Spectacular views.
Last night we stayed at Meekatharra Rocks 20km north of the town. It was the most beautiful, peaceful spot with a lovely sunset to finish a perfect afternoon. I think my best day so far.
Now, today, we are jammed into a van park, too close to unfriendly neighbours and paying nearly $40 for the honour.
I would also recommend the Great Northern Hwy, a great road, lots of road trains but plenty of room. Lovely country with wildflowers now appearing.

I take it they've removed the beehive from the loo at Mt Robinson then! That was enough to scare me off bush loos for life!
Mt Robinson is a fantastic place to stop and also those rocks north of Meekatharra. I hope to freecamp somewhere on the way into Tom Price tomorrow. (from the coastal road) Broome certainly has a bad name nowadays with the nomads and sounds like a place to stay briefly or avoid completely....no need for prices to be that high. It's a long way to travel just to be slugged.
Hi newhorizons - if you are looking for a spot on the way to Tom Price -there are a few free camps along the way - but one of the best deals is the Parabadoo caravan park - owned and managed by Rio Tinto I think- go into Para, opposite the shops is an accommodation block, go to the office, say you want to stay at the paraa park - $25 (with deposit for key to amenities) - best value - no dust, cleans as a whistle - individual amenities, and a free - yes FREE washing machines and dryers!! There are clothes lines as well.
Not much in Para - but there is a supermarket, and next to it (facing the mine accommodation block) you will find one of the best coffees in Australia - make sure to tell them it was recommended!
Tom Price CP is expensive - and they are the only place to get gas refill - talk about expensive - we could have filled four bottles at BCF for the price they wanted. Nice town, though - and the mine tour is great.
