So the story goes, and supposed to be true, but unconfirmed
Back in the day of the Great Depression, Kalgoorlie was a town where you could get casual employment, if you had underground mining experience
Two likely lads, from the Bunbury area, fancying their chances, went to the Goldfields
Alas with no underground mining experience, they were unable to gain employment
Back in the day there was no such thing as a Resume, so they had no option, except to tell lies in a verbal manner
The first likely lad went for an interview
He told the Mine Manger, that he had been employed in the Underground Mineral Sand Mines, in the Bunbury area.
When the Mine Manager asked how deep the Underground Mineral Sand Mines were, the likely lad replied nineteen feet. (That is five metres, seventy nine centimetres, and one point two millimetres in the new money)
The mine manager said that he was not experienced enough as the Kalgoorlie mines were thousands of feet deep
On the way out he told his mate that the Kalgoorlie mines were nineteen thousand feet deep
The second likely lad went for his interview
He told the Mine Manager that he had been employed in the Underground Mineral Sand Mines, in the Bunbury area, and that the last mine he was in, was nineteen thousand feet deep. (That is five kilometres, seven hundred and ninety one metres, and twenty centimetres, in the new money)
The manger said that he was very impressed at the depth of the Underground Mineral Sand Mines, in the Bunbury area.
He asked the likely lad what sort of lighting they used in such a deep mine
The likely lad replied
"I don't know anything about the type of lights they used boss, I never done the night shift"
