By proper dogs I mean full size not something you trip over all the time.
Rottie's Bully's etc are only part of the pack.
I prefered the English Pointers.
Cats. Like dogs will leave mess same as a dog if not trained.
If trained from birth to use tray only.
They normally will wait till they get to tray before emptying.
This one 11+yrs. never been anywhere but tray. Comes indoors to use it.
Just marks territory round the garden perimeter.
we travelled and lived with both over the yrs.
Much prefer cat's for travelling.
Stay in a dog park overnight sometime. Nearly always one barking yapping somewhere.
And One starts they all start.
You can have a hundred cats in there. You'll never hear a sound.
and civilised ones always use trays, no need to take outside.
All dogs bark and dig.
Cats will dig to pup but cover after. Even weeing they'll cover it.
Show me a dog that does that. ****. walk away every time.
Pisses on your car/van wheels, anything standing still.
Some don't like cats. Yrs ago I shot on sight out in Bush.
some don't like dogs. Shot them too. Out Bush.
But felines a lot less problem than dogs all round.
Less restricted access for a start.
Are you all right there Macka17, you started off about 'proper dogs', then you went on about pigs, then onto yard dogs, now you're waffling on about cats. Can't wait for your next post, what'll it be, budgerigars!
MACKA, I think the only thing you have ever shot at is your big toe!!
You actually should be in Politics or a Church Minister and an advisor on Sex matters or maybe you have been, please let us know. I have a few questions for you.
If cats are using your yard as a sewage pit....it means that they are keeping where they live clean.
Try spraying some really strong vinegar about the place about a foot above the ground. It mostly works I have found....but if it doesn't than that cat is feral ....and should be shot.
IMO....anyone who lets there cat outside at night to roam is a bloody careless imbecile....as cats are nocturnal and do the most damage at night. And for those misinformed people who say cats cant be trained ...bollocks!!!!!We let our cats out during the day while we are home.....and come 4.30 or thereabouts they are on the back step calling to come in.....one even pounds on the door.

The reason.....they get fed then.
Sorry Keith, that is not training, that is hunger!!!!!!
Struth Macka.
I'd hate to be a young boy playing near your van, or my foxy making a short single bark due to other dogs barking (we've trained her to bark once only but unlimited towards grumpy old men.).
Other people and animals have rights too. Within reason of course Chill mate..

Have it any bloody way you like M8....but it gets them inside and out of harms way all the time.
And they are not starving....they get breakfast before they go out each day....but they look forward to a yummy dinner in the evening.
Macka17 . Same here .. 118kg though .. I'm tempted to do what we did as kids . Put it in paper bag . Put it on their front door ., light the bag . Knock on the door and p o q.. Lol
Gday all and welcome to the forum Mylestom, you certainly chose a good subject to start.
In my opinion there is but ONE word that encompasses all this... CARE!! we all need to use more of it when we are out there, dogs, cats, unicorns all make pooh, CARE makes us pick it up! People who dont need people like Mylestom and others to remind them of CARE... We had 2 burmese cats and a rotty, not any more as the have passed but great animals none the less, we CARED and picked up after them, people need a gentle reminder at times, I like the pooh in the bag idea.
Cheers

Dogs not so bad as long as it not consistent.
Like I said. I prefer (AND a lot of others too) cats for travelling.
Been through dog phase when younger and fit.
Same as dogs. Cats CAN be trained.
Similarly, done by incentives. (food or otherwise.)
Haw did you train your pup?. Nibbles and pat.
Mention food or bed or door (him going out). and watch cat appear.
mention vet. tablet.or bath, bring him in.
and watch him disappear.
and they don't understand english. Hah.
Mine goes out in garden when I get up. Back in1\2 hr for defrosted brekky.
Out again around 3/3.30. back around 4ish for tea and in for night.
No checking garden for crap and yellow patches on lawn. No holes for bones.
everything nice and neat in tray.
What more could you want.
No comparison, sorry. I have Cornish Rex. Had Devon Rex prior.
NO fur or hair left anywhere Unlike dogs.
And Helen. I used to shoot for a living, kept my family of 5 for a few yrs.
not women though but we often cane close (chuckle)
Well I feel sick now, we just got a puppy and after reading all the comments about dogs ,the good and the bad , I don't like to go camping any more. The way I see it, more people hate dogs then love them, and all because some people do the wrong thing.
Cheers
Two years ago I gave away a most beautiful little dog because of nasty comments that just got worse. I've always regretted it and won't do it again with Daisy.
I prefer to travel on my own with my little dog for company.
What a fun thread this one is - NOT! Don't have animals at all, think it is too much trouble when travelling - but I love dogs (well behaved ones) - not so keen on cats tough.
If either a dog or cat are coming to your garden and doing their "business" - a good way to shoo them away is to sprinkle some hot chilli flakes or powder on the spots they are using - it burns their little bottoms!!!! Taught a dog used to come on a truck to work, to stay away from the garden near the front door with chilli flakes - have to replace them when it rains, but pretty cheap.

They are better company than a lot of humans in my opinion, especially those whose nasty comments bullied you into giving up your pet.
That's alright Macka. Lol
Seems there are two extremes here on this topic.
With our mini foxy, cute as a button to most, kids love her as do the elderly and frail. And she cries if she doesn't get a Pat from them.
Dont be put off people. If you are a good dog owner then travelling with him/her is a delight, keeps you fit and good little watch dog for those grumpy old men snooping about holding mysterious brown paper bags. Ha
We simply won't go without Miss Rosie of Strathbogie...

I worked, trained and looked after dogs for most of my working life so naturally I have a penchant for them, but really I like all animals, dogs, cats,****atoos, rabbits, wouldn't be without one. They are a gift and it's our responsibility to look after them! I just don't like nor trust anyone who doesn't like animals.
Any animal (human or non-human) can be a hazard. It all comes down to training.
I personally don't hate anything/anyone specifically: I hate 'em all equally, depending on what they do to tick me off at any moment in time. The python that tried to eat my lorikeet; the bloody parrot that squawked all day for 3 weeks in the van next door; the dog that would race out to either demand a pat/rip your leg off; the 'interesting' young men who walked up past our van on a specific day every fortnight for 6 months; the fools who let their dogs run loose in a lead-only park; tossers who don't pick up after their dogs; people who laugh off their cats catching native birds. All come in for a share of hating when I encounter them/ the results of their actions. And then I get over it, I have better things to spend my time/energy on.

This was not pointed at anyone. Just a comment about an example of what not to do whether Caravanning or Holidaying.
People take pride in where they live and don't appreciate animals or humans fouling it up.
As an ex farmer, dog breeder and trainer, I absolutely love well trained and restrained animals.
The fault is not with the animal but its human handler.
Enjoy your pets, but please be respectful for the places you visit, you would not want yourself/friends or your children/grandchildren to step in left behinds?
