Van Feet

Anyone got any comments on the van's steady feet? Just broken two of my Alko Big Foot feet (don't ask) and have been looking at some square ones. The Big Foot is 140mm diameter and the square ones are either 140mm or 180mm.

The legs on my van are sometimes at an angle on sloping ground and when this happens the feet sometimes slip and dig into the ground, even on a block of wood. Wondering if the big 180mm square ones would be better.

I made my own about 15 years ago before they came on the market in any quantity.

Son in Law just cut out the shapes from channel iron & I fitted some cupboard latches which have been replaced a couple of times.

A bolt through the leg holds them in place.

I made some in Stainless plate I had. with a 1in high flat strip welded all round them
to fill with water for ants when they around.
2 tangs and a S/S bolt holds 'em on.
About 7 x 7in, 2.5mm plate with coupla 1/4 x 1/4strips welded diagonally across bottom
to stop said slippage.

That was on prev, Roadstars.
Have to make some yet for this van (when it gets warmer.)

It had two of the 4 plastic ones still fitted.

Others "ripped off" already?.

Cupie. Fill in ends of yours and you can top up with water for ants to.
Just make sure water deeper that swivel bolts levels.
Gasket each end of bolts.
Save carrying the tub of baby powder around.

To answer your question LLD,

I put those feet on our last van and they were good.  Last year we were on some very rough roads and one did get the outer edge broken by a rock, but they were extremely tough and did the job well.

Cheers, Brownie

Yes.
but when you get up the top.
Specially in Territory, Ants are the thing.
Everywhere and uncountable.

It's either Talcum/Baby powder round all connections to the ground.
or water in feet. Powder round tyres and cables/hoses where they touch the ground.
Plus the pads of any description save sinking in softer ground.

Surface spray ok But gets exxy when stopping daily.

Hi there L L D

I dont see the point in buying any thing specific for this job. A base plate can be made out of an off cut of ply or flat plate almost anything flat can do just make it at least twice the size of the leg  cheers

The only reason that I have them is that it is one less job to do when setting up & one (or 4) less thing to leave behind.   Besides I get pleasure from making things like this.

I do carry a few different size pieces of wood.   If you follow me about the place you'll no doubt find a few that were left behind.

I rarely worry about ants.  There are so many ways that they can get in.

Yea Cupie.

Ants.

The first time you stop near a nest in territory or tropics. and come back to find van floor and cupboards full of them.
You may have a rethink. Even in Van Parks.

Most of us used to carry a big pack of Talc or baby powder from Woolies to spread round all contacts to ground..
I just stitched on the 1in flatbar for water as I had made feet and had that sitting there.

NEW CIG Inverter stick Welder. HAD to play. Replacing my Peerless 180A solid Copper coil rig on wheels
for lighter jobs.
This thing a two finger carry.
Wish I'd kept my CIG Brumby MIG though. That would be THE BEST home welder in the world.
