In the lead up to the State Of Origin games each year, I warm up by watching the decade or more of VHS tapes that I have, of games where Qld wins of course. Got lots of them going back to include 'Wally's Last' & the famous one where Benny flew Alfie back to clinch the series that includes his fantastic 'over the head' try.
Looking for something new, I searched the net for SOO archives & came up with this 1984 game that I am currently watching. I'll have to investigate how I can download a copy.
Being so old there are lots of differences to today's game like .. contested scrums, playing the ball forward where there are no markers & stripping the ball with two in the tackle. (edit) No kicking tees either. Lots of stray elbows & swinging arms. The NSW Ref as usual had a shocker, especially in the scrums. But that too was normal.
What a fantastic game Wally had both in attack & defence .. despite coming in for somme very heavy treatment. One of his best games ... Showing his greatness.
I think that Stanton was NSW coach & made Aus coach before the game. Was it on the tour to NZ where he overlooked many of the Qld stars (including Wally) for NSW players? Whether it was this series or later, it was just another reason while Qld rails against NSW in SOO series.

Yes !!! how the game has changed, but in my view for the worse. I enjoyed the fact that if I had the ball it was up to you to get it off me.
but !! I will still support my beloved Maroons to make it a white wash on Wednesday night.
I have had the privilege to watch both Lewis and Thurston, and I must say that whilst they both played in different eras, it is hard to say who was or is the better player. Perhaps Thurston by a whisker, due to his goal kicking greatness.
Jay&Dee
Goooo the Mighty Maroons.

It's hard to choose between greats in any era ... but have a good look at Lewis in the link that I posted. A fantastic game in both attack & defence. Not sure that I have seen JT play better. Meninga had a shocker & couldn't kick a goal even from right in front.
But I reckon that JT has the advantage with his interpersonal & fan relationships. While NSW hated Lewis (but that's not such a bad thing) and there were some whisperings about his relations within the team, with the Coach & in another area, that is certainly not the case with JT.
The modern day players seem to have far better prepared bodies & perhaps greater skill sets. Boustead was great on the wing but you see some fantastic winger feats almost every week these days.
I watched an old Aus v NZ game yesterday & Johns was unbelieveable. Certainly in the mix with Wal & JT but perhaps a bit behind them being from NSW.
And his Brothers love??? for somebody else's wife.
League is more controlled nowadays. The old style was more like Union.
where the rougher blokes got ball over.
Was a lot of "brick ****houses" in those days.
Thick... Outside AND in.
Specially when I was playing and watching in the '50's and early '60's.
Not saying much about some of the modern ones either.
when you listen to them on interviews. drrrrrr. has nothing on some.
Sounding like well knocked about old ring fighters..
Won't be too many red shirts watching at match.
Most watching at home, a hopefully, putting 'em in their place again game.
At last c0ckroaches won in the last minute. Had to happen eventually.
If ever they were to win a game it was this one. What about the first half stats? No team could win without the ball & have the steam taken out of them with all the defence one man down for 10 minutes to boot. The half time score was a credit to the good guys & they almost pulled off the impossible.
I wonder if Conk will follow Kevie's lead (after game 1 comments) and admit that NSW got the rub of the green in this game.
At least I got involved in this one. SWMBO had to come downstairs to close the door on me. Seems like I was giving the ref too much help/advice. Almost cracked a bottle of red but resisted the temptation. Been 2 months on the dry .. but who's counting.
Good luck to them. Winners can laugh & losers can please themselves.
Great to see the end of Gallen. Christ he's a grub & dirty player .. did you see his knee to the head in the first few tackles that went unseen or at least unpenalised (he's not like our clean as driven snow Queenslanders) but I'm already looking at a couple of replacements to hate. Trouble is that they don't stay in the team long enough to really hate.
I think David Klemmer will take over as an adequate resident Mongrel Cupie...
9 Frees to 1 against, plus we were down to 12 men.....after the send off...players being knocked down and shepherded/ prevented from following the ball...no one can beat those odds....No way the Refs were on top of the game..
Like Turnbull's uncomfortable narrow win, its not a convincing win that will fill anyone in NSW with confidence....
Still a great origin game with everyone on both sides trying 100% ...65,000 crowd....I think Origin will stay the distance...Parker and Gallen served their States well....Hoo Roo
