Hi Dorian, we spent many years with fostering greyhounds regardless of their racing career that doesn't change their nature, once retired they are more than happy to relax, we have put them into all sorts of homes, with kids, the elderly, they go through a thorough rehoming programme then into foster care and the new owners are well vetted, we are not for or against greyhound racing. Good and bad but the industry had to do something about the greyhounds that didn't make the grade for racing and put down, and it's not just the few greyhound owners do it happens in the dog pedigree industry,it wasn't that long ago that white German shepherds where put down, there is a lot going on in the name of "for the betterment of the breed" we are involved in breeding ( not pedigrees) and have a good knowledge of what goes on,i would not hesitate to recommend a greyhound as a pet, there is supposed to be changes to dog breeding in Victoria coming up in the next sitting of parliament in August/September which will effect all breeders and not for the better it will do absolutely nothing to stop puppy farms except to put a lot of registered and ethical breeders out of business, sorry for the rant danny
AH Time for an inquiry for 2 /4 yrs then a royal commission 3/4 yrs and after well have a white paper 2/3 yrs and then don't forget political correctness **** it'll never happen to much pressure.
Having worked for a vet for fourteen years I can assure you Dorian - they are the most lovely natured dogs you could ever wish for. Held dozens of them while the vet did some necessary but unpleasant and painful things. Never a snap or a snarl from them. Friend has two retired ones and they ARE great with their grandchildren. Instead of an overload of politicians who spend their time squabbling and backbiting, we need competent people out there doing the rounds to make sure that things are being run the correct way.
My first pig dog was 3/4 english bull terrier & 1/4 Grey Hound.
The Bull terrier line was one with a great record as pig dogs but the Greyhound line was from a bitch who only wanted to attack the other dogs when let out of the gate. We wanted the greyhound bit to make him faster onto the pigs & lift him up a bit when chasing through the scrub. The breeder had lost a couple of good dogs staked in the long grass or being done over by a boar after arriving on the scene too knocked up after a long chase.
At least that's what Sgt Plod the breeder told me.
In any case it was a fantastic & (mostly) controllable pig dog .. always went for the ear & stayed on. Important as we hunted together without other dogs. Just a big knife or pistol.
But he was great with kids. A favourite trick was to play with their ears, holding them down without drawing blood.
I got tired of taking him walking every afternoon, so I got into the habit of letting him out the gate to go on his own. Worked great for a bit. He would come back in an hour or so all knocked up. Eventually the neighbours began to complain that he was doing the rounds beating up all their dogs ,, even the ones chained up.
Must have been the Bull Terrier in him & not the Greyhound.
There must be few better ways to enjoy oneself than watching a properly blooded pet rip a pig to shreds. Ah, the great outdoors!
Sure, something that I wouldn't do these days. Too old to run thru the bush or to climb a safety tree.
In fact a 'properly blooded pet' doesn't 'rip a pig to shreds', that is what the pig does to newborn sheep & perhaps calves. The dog just goes in & restrains the pig by holding an ear. If in a pack, one dog might grab a hind leg.
The hunter dispatches the pig with a pig sticker/large knife into the jagular. Just like they do in the abattoirs. Or perhaps a single shot into the brain .. taking care not to hit the dog of course.

I think the end of greyhound racing represents the inevitable evolution of our moral Zeitgeist. Imagine if nothing had changed since Roman times. We would now have one hundred thousand bloodthirsty spectators packed into the Melbourne Cricket Colosseum to watch a matchup between the Lions and the Muslims. No doubt some people will dismiss the focus on animal cruelty as some kind of feminisation of modern society. Others will say that gambling is part of the culture, but AISI the racing business is irredeemably involved with organised crime. In fact it's the nature of the beast. Good riddance to a bad industry, I say.
BTW, in 20 years of walking my dogs, I had never before encountered a greyhound. Yet today, for the very first time, I walked past a couple with their hound on a leash. My dog has been attacked twice by terriers, so this has made her very wary. Most other dogs usually pick up on this and become emboldened toward her, but this greyhound just stood its ground, gave my dog a glance, and then looked away, apparently disinterested.

I left the Greyhound Industry years ago as a hobby trainer...because it was, and still is a vile cruel sport....majority are the desperados of the ""Racing Industry"..mostly non dog nor animal loving folk...the dogs themselves are beautiful natured, however no small animal is safe around them after they have been blooded..its why they must wear muzzles....most training/breeding estabs have substantial numbers of greyhounds buried down the back after their, as its described in the Industry,' last walk'...blooding them with small animals and pigeons tied to a long pole swung in a circle after releasing them from a racing box usually secreted somewhere on their property...many pet shops used to have standing orders for their kittens and rabbits/guinea pigs etc..vile blatant cruelty well known and mostly hidden within the Industry...left to their own devices they will not and cannot clean up their ""Industry"". Live hare coursing was also banned years ago because of obvious cruelty.. against howls of protest from their "dog loving owners' at the time...
Good riddance and I hope this non sport is banned by osmosis through each State...
This proposed Legislation will not help those dogs already born..it is about protecting those Greyhound pups that will not NOW be bred in the future, because if there is not a quid in it for their breeders/owners..these non dog loving folk will lose interest fast in Greyhounds per ce'.. Of course you can expect the shows of 'loving owners' to now be displayed.....of course there will be howls of protests from the vested financial interests....all to be expected, and they had their chance if they were ever going to remove the blatant cruelty on so many levels..in their ""Sport"".
Perhaps the usual fat slug trainers can use their walking machines now to lose some weight and find an honest occupation. I hope the NSW Gov't stands firm on this and other States take note as well...Hoo Roo

It was never going to happen, not for the money involved but because it was attacking the battler, the battlers were in bigger numbers that the government thought, and battlers fight long and hard which is a lesson that Baird & Grant have now learnt the hard way, much to their tarnished ego's.
the working class cannot be bullied when in large numbers and the Chips are down!!!

This was the tip of the ice berg for the animal liberation ratbag mob, they want to ban everything involving animals. That includes raising cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry for slaughter.
Milking cows is also on their list. If they had their way the economy of the country would be at risk.
Banning Childrens animal petting at shopping centres and shows is another of their weird ideas.
These dogs are bred to race not as pets that's a fact. They are a dog that most people would not have as a pet ,what happens when they cannot do what there bread to do, the kind loving breeder looks after them the rest of there lives I suppose, feeds them, nurtures them in growing numbers over the years, that's not going to happen in most cases, what happens to these poor creatures probably a bullet in the head and buried in a pit, that's my concern...
Glad another win for common sence, should look hard at the backyard breeder and how many animals they put down every year. Certainly would be greater in number and cruelty compared to the greyhound industry.

The fact is more racehorses are 'put down' than greyhounds and the RSPCA is the biggest animal 'exterminator' of all...the government sure has it's priorities skewed and they are out of whack. The Animal Liberation movement does have it's priorities too and they are completely off the planet, they should all be the 1st occupants of Mars, that would sort them out well and truly

Mark Pearson needs to be on the first flight, I know a lot of people who will pay for his one way ticket.
