Will end of greyhound racing in NSW and ACT mean more camping grounds?

As the subject says, I wonder if the end of greyhound racing in NSW and ACT will mean more camping grounds? At the very least, expect more dogs (aka depreciated assets) to be dumped by their breeders. The local radio keeps trying to convince us that they make great pets.

I wonder how certain it is that greyhound racing will indeed be closed down in these States given there is so much money involved and people with political power ?

If it happens, tts likely the properties and tracks will be sold off for new housing wherever possible.

As far as greyhounds being great pets, in WA there is a strong volunteer organization that rescues dogs before they are disposed off whenever they can (although many are shipped off to China now). Ive "met" a number of the socialized dogs, and they are extremely loving and tolerant of kids pulling their ears etc

Greyhound racing finishes 1 July 2017 in NSW

Hearsay or evidence Bruce!

All greyhound trainers and owners know or have known about the cruelty of the industry!

Greyhound racing is no more cruel than most forms of horse "sport" where if you break a leg and it's all over and if you can still hobble around it's off to the knackers. And they call it the sport of kings!.

Good Luck.

BaupleNut. Obviously you missed a series of TV news programmes when all the greyhound debacle went down last year. Greyhound owners were selling off the non-winning dogs and they were sent to Hong Kong and often then to China.

The programmes went into great and horrifying detail as to how these animals were "looked after" and those that didn't make the grade were shown in their 100's out in a paddock being injected with insecticide to die in agony. They even interviewed the Minister of Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce about it - but he wasn't prepared to tighten up laws preventing this "legitimate" industry.

That's my evidence !!

I reckon there will be less campgrounds as all the dog tracks will be developed into housing estates

Everything is being banned. It won't be long before they ban swimming in the ocean as too many people pee in it. Stuffing up the eco system. Squeaky wheels get all the attention.

We hope it's banned Australia wide forever, along with horse racing. It's all about money & where there's money there's corruption! End of story.

In country areas many of the dog tracks are at the local showgrounds.

Some may be opened up for camping.

Showgrounds will be looking for a new source of revenue if the dog racing goes.   Low cost camping might be one way to go.

BTW, great move by NSW Govt.

And let's not forget about the big money involved in .... AFL, ARL, Olympics, Cricket, Soccer (hockey might survive along with netball .. but then I'm not too sure about those short skirts) ban American baseball & Gridiron and certainly tennis and Golf.

It's just not natural for horses to gallop or dogs to chase things  .. is it?  Then there's humans chasing balls of all sorts .. yes, un-natural & corrupt behaviour.

With none of this stuff permitted, we can spend more time in Church.

Ban the lot I say .... but don't get me started on swearing, nudity, smokes & alcohol.

Agreed.

In fact the only reason dog and horse racing exists is to provide gambling.

There is no resemblance to sport in these activities.

Ban gambling on all sport and horse racing and dog racing will disappear.

Cheers,

Peter

Now the racing industry in WA is whining that this will impact on the viability of their business as over $10M in this State alone is wasted on dog race gambling. Poor old state govt is seeing the potential sale of the WA TAB going down the dunny in terms of scraping together some much needed cash

The chronic gamblers will just change what they bet on if the dogs are unavailable.

Pity there is only the CMCA as an organised club to maybe get the message out there to the owners and operators of ex-dog facilities of the opportunities.

Having been owner and trainer of greyhounds ,maybe the RSPA should release how many unloved pets are put down every year.

big write up in The Australian newspaper today. Apparently the NSW RSPCA put down over 100,000 cats and dogs (the numbers of each species was not given) last year.

Sounds like it could get very nasty for Premier Baird next election as many country areas are up in arms about the affect this will have on their employment right across the community and the industry is putting together a $1M fighting fund to lobby politicians, advertise and take the issue to Court.

Well now if the dog racing tracks are made into camping grounds for GNs maybe the gambling folk can bet on how many GNs will be there each night.

You obviously have no real idea of A greyhounds nature and are only expressing a biased opinion Which is a popular myth proferred to the majority, hence the reason why many are not owned as pets.

They actually make wonderful pets and have very few breeds that are better, they seldom if ever bark, are child friendly and just love people and attention, they prefer to laze around and just be contented, seldom drop hair and have little or no doggy odour!

Can you tell us of your EXPERIENCE with them Please?

I wasn't actually expressing an opinion. I was simply stating a fact, namely that there are frequent ads on local radio which encourage people to accept greyhounds as pets. I haven't followed them up, but I bet that these are all adult greyhounds who have run their last race.

As for barking, my personal experience is that greyhounds are not a nuisance in this respect (a neighbour had one many years ago). Otherwise my only personal encounter with a greyhound was in a caravan park. It was being walked on a leash and proved to be a docile animal. In fact it almost dozed off while I was stroking its chin.

That said, I have a kelpie. It is a very active breed which requires a great deal of exercise and attention. I would have thought that a breed which has been trained to run would be unsuitable for most people, especially GNs. I'm truly surprised that yours prefers to lie idle.

BTW, I am annoyed that breeders/trainers dump their animals on the public when they cease to be a financial asset.

Totally agree, there is so much wrong with this decision, makes you wonder what's in it for the government.
