We are off to Hawaii. We will visit all the memorials and have a few hours on board the mighty Mo (USS Missouri) and USS Bowfish. A few days in Honolulu and back home. Cant wait..

Been there a few times . I got very emotional believe it not going out on Pearl Harbour . Did you know 7 times more bombs were dropped in Darwin .. Don't need warm clothes there . For sure .

We will be flying back (not on the unbroken line though) but the captain of the ship will be following that line.. lol

Great to hear you're going on such a fantastic cruise Phil !

As a Kiwi can I suggest you make sure that if in fact you go into Picton - you make sure you are on deck as you cruise into the Sounds. Its the South Pacific version of Norways fiords (depending on time of year - no snow, but beautiful.

Wellington is a smaller version of Melbourne - full of govt servants and Bankers. But the National Museum is a not to be missed if you are there long enough to visit and the cafes and coffee all through the city are to die for

Have a great trip, well done. We do a fair few DIFFERENT travel things (flying, cruising) in our retirement besides RVing on mainland Australia. It makes for a more varied & interesting retirement.

Good choice.  We love Hawaii    ..  We stayed in a beaut Highrise right on Waikiki beach on 23rd floor  ..  fantastic!

Never done a cruise though.  Waiting until I get old enough for that. (Only 75) ha ha.

 

Make sure that you go to The Polynesian Cultural Centre ... shell out a few more bucks & do the top package. It includes a personal guide for a group of <10.  The buffet food there was outstanding (no booze though) & the evening show was the best that we have seen ... even better than the Follies Bergere ... but then we had front row seats at TPCC & met many of the performers. We were unanimous in that it was the most enjoyable 'event' of our visit.

A slow local bus trip round the Island is good value too.  Hop on hop off.

Next time we will do a cruise around all of the Island group .. takes about a week.

A walk up Diamond Head is worth the effort & Pearl Harbour is worth at least one trip.

SWMBO will love the shopping at Moana shopping centre & Walmart is just up the road  Great free entertainment there too (both places). 

ABC shops are best for snacks, booze & souvenirs.  They are everywhere .. Just like the Jap tourists.

Lots of restaurant shows to choose from but you may need to book.  All prices.

Good place to buy your Panama hats too.   Cheap .. circa $100 .... $200+ here.  Nothing like the fashion statement of a GN in floppy thongs, bumb crack stubbies,  holey singlet & a well worn Panama.... sucking on a stubbie or a mug of rough red of course.

 Gee you lot... Love ya to bits BUT Im only a boy of 65.. Plan to enjoy as much as I can before they roll me into a box..

This will be our 3rd cruise so we are well use to the decadent lifestyle... BRING IT ON!!!

I forgot to mention that compulsory reading before visiting Hawaii is the book of that name Hawaii by James A Michener.  Seriously.  Especially given that you are going to visit Papeete & Bora Bora on the way there.

I found walking around the Arizona Memorial was the strangest feeling. It was really spooky. When  I booked the trip I didn't realize it was the fiftieth anniversary of the bombing and there were quite a lot of survivors who you could recognize from the caps they wore. We went to several events and I often wondered how the survivors felt when they were sitting next to busloads of Japanese even though they would not have been born at the time of the bombing

One of the best things we did when In Hawaii (on a 35 day cruise across Pacific) was a helicopter tour over the island of Kawai. Fantastic. The inland part of the island is like a mini Grand Canyon. I've done the cultural centre twice & agree it's not to be missed. Definitely stay for the show at night. Alice
