AM FM Radio for the best reception in remote Australia

I have been told that something like the Digital Sangean or Sony amongst others. DAB radios, battery run, are supposed to work throughout Australia.(Sold in JB Hi-Fi) I cannot confirm from my own experience only from the blurb that recommends them for exceptional weather situations like cyclones. I think that at the moment it's the main cities where they work. Maybe in the future DAB will cover the country I think it's like the NBN internet. Bigger populations first the rest of the country second class.

DAB radios have very limited coverage out of metro areas.

I have a Degen 1103 see here :- www.ebay.com/bhp/degen-1103

And for value for money they are excellent and have a very sensitive tuner, so will pull in distant stations with ease, the package comes with a plug in long wire antennae for short wave listening too.

I also have a small Sangean with headphones, but the Degen runs circles around it for sensitivity.

DAB radios are basically useless in the bush.

you can generally get AM in most areas of the country as the ABC is partially funded by the Govt to supply radio services to remote areas.

Unfortunately the ABC has over the past few years become Sydneycentric (focused on metro areas) and various internet services with a reduction or erosion of country services. Hopefully with a new ABC M.D, things will change

Hi gearlly;

Me being a amature radio operator with a full licence, i would recommend a good communications radio. NOT a transceiver, but just a AM/SW radio and some even will have a FM band as well.

Like banjo I too have a Degen 1103 which has excellent am, fm and shortwave reception. Also has SSB. Cost about $90 and come with rechargeable batteries that you charge whilst in the radio and a long extension aerial that you can string to a tree. Good luck

If you have a VAST satellite TV decoder you can access 120 radio stations all over Aus.

Everything from ABC to commercial to music only stations of any Genre you like.

I use an excellent World Band Portable Radio obtained from Jaycar Bendigo..I see currently $219 however they put on Special regularly for about $160....its Digitech AR-1945 World Band with AM/FM/SW/LW/Air Bands with SSB receiver =Single Side Band.. 500 pre set channels.....Dimensions W310 x 195Hx 100D mm Mains and Battery..Clock/Alarm/ Illuminated..Numeric Keypad for direct entry...External Aerial Connection Local/DX antenna switch...runs on 6 AA inserted into 6 x D battery adapters which are included...

I use this between Laverton and Leonora W.A. in the donga...... the World is your oyster sitting under the stars....Although it has Air Band =Aircraft I havn't tried that feature...Good Value for money when on Special.....Hoo Roo

I have no idea about any commercial stations ... I only listen to ABC. I use this frequency searcher frequently
