Hi I was wondering what are people's thoughts on this, my initial thoughts are that its a good idea but will it work??? For people who don't know how air bnb works its a web  site for people who would like to rent/lease their RV when they are not using it to generate a bit of extra cash. It was a topic on TV this morning

having rented out houses in the past and having them damaged to various degrees by the tenants, I would never want to rent out my 'van. Its fragile enough, especially inside, that rough handling of things like Dometic blinds, and cupboard doors would end up in a cardboard box !

Our caravan is our pride & joy along with our boat. We fastidiously look after both of them. We would never consider hiring our caravan out, besides my wife doesn't like the idea of strangers rifling through her nicker draw. devil.gif We don't need the money either.

ISTR a thread where a rep from one of the insurance companies or magazines (?) floated a similar idea. The response from the GNs was surprisingly acrimonious. That said, I wouldn't trust a stranger with my property, be it my house or car or van or anything else.

Two words NO WAY insurance may not cover any damage done or repairs may be on you and can be costly.

Air bnb is for holiday houses or a room in your house. Not sure if there is a vehicle or caravan category

We all like to holiday yes? How many of us caravan, motorhome owners can afford to for as long as we like? I mean the GFC hit many people including self funded retirees. Nowadays I don't know what interest rates you get on your money but it can't be much. So for many people with an assert sitting in the back yard this might seem attractive especially if you still have a mortgage or haven't had inheritance. I fully understand the distaste of hiring out your pride and joy but if you can afford not to then it's a no brainer. I believe as the haves and the have nots division widens some won't have a choice. And many of those with dwindling assets will drop down in income and have little choice in the matter.

Maybe one day we may see people buying shares in a caravan or Motorhome like they do with boats .

How will the insurance company view this? Assuming you can get insurance, this has the potential of sending premiums through the roof.Towing a caravan competently is a bit different to renting a house or a room. There are enough clowns out there who are proud at the fact that they are overweight, we don't need any more.

Larry, this 'hire industry' has been in place for some time ... and growing.

Insurance is not a problem. However, same as any other asset you own - insure it against your use ... BUT if you rent it out then you put the proper insurance in place - here is one example ...

Insurance is not a problem at all, I don't rent my van out but I do have a rental caravan and the insurance comes in at below $1000 pa which includes down time and rental times, in 2 years it has had no real damages other than a slight tear in the awning that was replaced and we kept the $600 bond so not a real problem.

the rental conditions are that caravan is returned in the condition it went out, otherwise a cleaning fee (commercial) is taken out of the bond before the refund, simple.

If you can get $800 -$1,000 a week in season for a van you can afford to repair a lot of doors, window fittings etc. You can also take a holding deposit to cover any damage by the hirer.

Circumstances made it necessary to rent out our family home once. When the tenants left 12 months later was really upset with what they had damaged. I own a small ex housing commission house for rent, damage to that doesn't worry much at all, covered by bond or insurance, not personal. No way would I rent out my own van, do lend it to family.

 When those overweight clowns have a prang their insurance company will not want to know them. Just a few kilos overweight & the policy is null & void. Insurance companies are onto this situation big time.

One should be focused on being knowledgeable of, and within, their weights and loading for THEIR SAFETY and the safety of other road users .... NOT because of some mis-placed fear that their insurance will be void.

I doubt ANY insurance company ..... or anyone else for that matter .... would ever know if any of those vans were over-weight. no
