Hi...I'm a female solo traveller, just new to this site. I'm currently near Wangaratta and looking at driving to the coast to Merimbula then heading north.. My map shows three possible routes ...just wondering if someone could advise me on steepness and condition of the roads. Also, with the cold snap due on Friday, I am wondering about snow and ice. I'm pulling a small caravan with a Subaru Outback...so not a lot of power. One road is from Wangaratta through Bright, Omeo to Orbost...another is from Albury through Corryong, to Bombala...the third is Albur ythrough Tumbarumba, Cooma, to Bombala.
I would also love to chat and maybe meet with fellow travellers in the region. I have been in Victoria for the last 8 weeks and am now heading toward warmer climes....so making my way north up to SE Qld ....eventually finishing my travels at the end of September. Love to hear of nice places to stay if you are willing to share your secret hidey holes...lol.
The cold spell forecast for the next few days is going to bring snow and icy conditions to parts of all 3 routes you name. I personally wouldn't do any of them in these conditions. Suggest you could go to the coast via Hume-Yass-Canberra-Batemans Bay. Or come south on Hume to Seymour-Yea-Lilydale-Ringwood & Eastlink to Gippsland and through to NSW that way.
Thank you for that..I was thinking none of these three roads were a good options at present. Looks like it might be easier to go up the Hume and leave Merimbula for the return trip.

The Canberra to Batemans Bay is ok going from Canberra along the King Hwy until you start to come down and I mean down the Clyde mountain. Locals in Batemans Bay call it the Clyde Hill but not me. I reckon mountain describes it better. You could end up having to "paint you wagon"
I personally like Wendyv's last suggestion. Nice drive too. A little windy and a few hills but easy going. Maybe from Yea, find your way to Pakenham instead of Lilydale. Just an extra thought.

Thank you Dougwe...for both the welcome and the information. I'm a little concerned about the noise my CVs are making so trying to travel with minimal load from hills. i think I might need to forgo Merimbula and just make my way up the Hume to where I'm headed on the midnorthcoast for repairs.
Sounds much better WS. Could be brakes on the aluminium tent. Just take it easy going through Pentland Hills, Sydney. I plan my trips though there around 10am on a Sunday. Easy peasy.
I went from Mornington Peninsula, south of Melbourne all the way around the coast to Milton, further up from Batemans Bay without brakes but the Colorado dealt with it well. I didn't know at the time until I heard loud squealing around Batemans Bay area. Thought it was a welcoming committee until I discovered no brakes.

Lol...sounds like a wild time..though handled well. Thank you for the warning re Pentland Hills and the time tip for Sydney....a place I always find nervewracking to drive through..or round.
Hi Wandering Star, and a big welcome from me as well. I think Doug is referring to Pennant Hills when going through Sydney, takes you to the M1 at Wahroonga. I was born and bred in Sydney but have very little knowledge of the western and northwestern suburbs, however I'd agree with the Chief that early-ish on a Sunday morning would be the best time if you can manage it.

Hello Joe and thank you for the welcome. I will indeed keep Sunday morning in mind as a good time to move through and round Sydney. Its rather like travelling through a digestive system ...swallowed in...churned around...pushed through the pipeline... then finally shot out the other end to continue with the next phase of the journey...lol
