When we go to the Atherton Tablelands we stop at a great caravan Park Walkamin central about $25 a night great central shed with fire place and camp kitchen , It is between Atherton and Mareeba 18 klm from Atherton and 15 klm from Mareeba , Easy day trip to explore the Tablelands , It's is about 1 hours drive to Cairns if you want to have a look around Cairns , Cairns caravan can be hard to get into and are very pricey .

The caravan park at Walkamin (between Mareeba & Atherton) Is a good one. Also camping area just before Tolga (donation) is also good. Never use caravan park in Cairns so can't help there. Cheers Alice

G'day Mike, I've stayed at Malanda Falls CP twice nice town and pretty well central on the tablelands a huge park. When in Cairns I stayed at the Cairns Coconut Resort because of time of night never again packed in like sardines and expensive, my last three trips I have stayed at Crystal Cascades great place out in the Redlynch are quite and again very easy getting to town or north and south of Cairns via Cairns Western Arterial Rd.

Hello mike g g, I have personally not stayed in a C P in Cairns as it is my home town. What I can tell you is, the 2 Big Four parks are very popular, the Cairns Coconut Resort has won Aust. Tourism award 7 times, and is very popular even for locals to stay. Crystal Cascades suits those who like peace and quiet with lovely bush walks. Palm Cove you would need to book as it right on the beach. Lake Placid is another park situated on the Barron River with lovely walks along the river, and yes B CROCODILE AWARE. Cairns Holiday park is very close to town and looks to be clean and tidy.
Some of the other parks I would not recommend. BE very aware of security. I would recommend you have a look at the other parks in Cairns before booking, as they may not appeal to you, there are some I would not stay at!
The Walkerman, Malanda and Atherton Parks are always popular. Have just come back from Mareeba today and there is a lot of vans up here.
The prices compare with any other well maintained parks around Australia, electricity, land and water rates and insurance are not cheap in North Queensland.
Enjoy your visit to the Far North

With regard to brickies post - Rocky Creek has a STRICT generator rule, I believe - NO GENERATORS!

Another vote for Walkamin Central Van Park.

As for Cairns my first choice would be Fishery Falls about 15 minutes south of Cairns.

We stayed at Palm Cove, in the good old days but I believe a few renovations have meant the price has skyrocketed. Out of Atherton we stayed at Yunguburra. Great spot about 25 a night

Yes NeilandRaine, Palm Cove is still a great spot, but as more people are wanting better amenities and facilities the Council have had to improve the park. When I was young we would stay in camp grounds with the basic facilities and loved it, there were not the $80,000  to $ 100,000 rigs pulling up wanting Wi Fi and television reception. But we still enjoyed our holidays at Hervey Bay, Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

Safe travels
