Insurance on contents and personal items while caravanning around Australia (with no home base)

Hi all, Can anyone please shed some light on who supplies insurance cover for personal effects while caravanning around? A family member has sold up everything, bought a van & is going to travel around Australia however is finding it difficult to get insurance cover for his contents in the van or in the car, (especially portable items like cameras, laptops, phones etc ).

I would imagine there would be loads of you that have come across this. Any help would be appreciated please, thanks in advance.

Cheers

Gday DeeMe and welcome to this wonderful forum

We insure through CIL, they have both insurance for the caravan (we live in 24/7) and the contents. Not the cheapest on the block but IMHO the very best. We had a claim last year that was caused by my neglect and there was no argument as to the repair of the van.

Hope this helps.
Cheers

The same happened to us. CIL by far the most experienced company when it comes to caravan and contents insurance.

Cheers,

Talk to an insurance broker, not the companies or agents, but a BROKER.

We also went with CIL for our 'van insurance as you can specify the amount you want to insure for personal effects. But like other insurance co's, they do not cover mobile phones, but they do cover tablets, computers etc that most others wont. Also check to see what other items, like generators, are not covered.

Thanks everyone. Please keep the suggestions coming for choices

BrizAnd...I'm not sure who the brokers would be for C.I.L..... can I ask why you recommend to go through brokers instead of the insurance company direct please? I appreciate your input

Remember someone has to pay the Broker - usually the insurance co and that's reflected in their premiums to their customers.

There is a broker - been mentioned many times before on this site. Think his name is Phil Tane - but someone here recently said he had sold his business to an insurance co. Very much like "Aussie" - they have been owned by Com Bank for a couple of years now but somehow trade as an independent Broker not tied to a particular financial institution

We are with RACT. We nominate the items and amounts for specific items above a given value and a blanket amount for other gear. I don't know for sure but imagine other RAC's do a similar deal.  They also cover the van. Never been any problem with claims, not that there's been that many in our 14 years.

Hi Deeme,

We are with Ken Tame Insurance. You have to join CMCA ( %50 or $60 pa ) and gives you some benefits.

Ken Tame specialises in RVs ,- all types  ours is a caravan. Rates were excellent and you nominate what you want to cover e.g. cameras, phones etc.

For us the added benefit they would insure our imported Chevy Silverado where as most wouldn't

Bruce and Bev, it is good to hear that you have worked all your life and did it for nothing !

A broker deals with all insurance companies, and is paid by them, the reason for dealing with a broker is they shop around for you and quite often can give you a better policy from your insurance company than what you got yourself.

I would recommend a broker group called steadfast, they have about 300 brokers around Australia and they are the best broker group, I am a retired member of this group and know that they get better terms for you.

Remember bruce you get what you pay for.

Bruce,

your story about a broker selling his business to an insurance company is not possible as the brokers business involves maybe dealing with forty insurance companies, could you imagine one company allowing their policies to be owned by a rival ?

Like most stories they lose a bit each time somebody tells the story.

Regards, Brisand
