Lowlife attempted credit card fraud.

Had a text this morning at 5.15 from the bank asking had we spent $175.91 at the chemist warehouse at 5.10am. Replied that we hadn't, then had a phone call asking to confirm. Credit card cancelled, now have to wait 5-7 working days to get a new one. Some low life, bottom dwelling, scum sucker had skimmed my card. Will have to get one of those card protector thingies. Will also have to log onto another card to see if they got that one. Later, haven't touched that one. furious

They are out there and they are after easy money, usually to buy drugs but not from a chemist.

Now there's a first. My drug supplier always wants cash or (stolen) goods. He doesn't have a mobile EFTPOS machine.

Do you know where it happened eg ATM.

Reason why I ask, is that SWMBO can use a CC tied to my CC/account, and I can use a CC tied to her CC/Account. So if one card has problems we can still use the other card. But if the scammer had one of those devices that can scan the CC remotely, such a device would pick up both cards in my wallet and render then useless. I only use the CC protection sleeve when OS.

We each have a card protector (RFID) in which we keep all of our cards as that way they can't be skimmed. We also have a wallet for our passports, RFID again, for the same reason. Apparently they always buy something that uses only a small amount to see if they can get away with it. At least your bank is on the ball.

I had a call a few years ago from our bank asking if I had authorised a fuel purchase in London. I laughed and told them that the last time I was in London was 1986! My card had already been cancelled by the bank before they rang me and that explained why it hadn't worked properly at the vet's in the morning. I was very glad they did it.

Unless you really need PayPass, you could simply drill through the antenna wires in your card.

One wonders why a relatively small chemist transaction attracted the attention of the bank?

I hope the bank call wasn't the actual scammers looking for credit card details.

I once had a call from my bank because my card had been used over a USA counter (Walmart I think) to buy something.  I assume that got my bank's attention because that card was not used for any travel purchased but turned up in USA.  It was not unusual for me to buy stuff from ebay etc but this card was Presented.

Cheers Neil

The same thing happened to me last year. Checked my card to change the daily limit and it showed I had spent nearly $1000 and when I checked there were 31 purchases. They were in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne for phone credits of $30 or less. Notified Combank security and had a refund the next day.

The card was probably skimmed by someone in a crowded shop. Was picked up by the bank as we never shop online at that time and the chemist was "flagged" by the bank as apparently it is a target. I have purchased two of these. One each.

Damn inconvenient, but luckily we are not travelling.

My wife and I stayed at a well known Hotel in St Kilda and when booking in, and making full payment, for my two night pre-booked room, the counter/reception Staff insisted on taking my National Platinum MasterCard into the next room to Photostat, I protested, and they stated it was their 'practice' to cover any in room drinks etc used from the fridge if not paid for on leaving......
A week later I received a call from National Bank asking if I had purchased several thousand dollars of sporting gear from a store in London....

Told them no, and gave them details of the recent Hotel stay.....National seemed unconcerned, and assured me I would not be out of pocket, and issued new cards...which they did....it must be so common, and I seemed to be the only one concerned...I even thought it would be a Police matter.....what a dandy little scam those Hotel staff must be running......
My point being I will never let my card be removed to another room, or from my sight, in future for any reason whatsoever....I just won't check in....I should point out this was immediately before the Banks cancelled the practice of signatures on MasterCard purchases...may have been the reason...however my experience could still happen with the three digit security number still available for them to see on the reverse of card.

Trust no-one and always insist on shuffling the pack.....Hoo Roo

In the big picture one thing we must not forget that when this sort of thing happens the banks pay the back into our account. Now would they if we tamper with the card in anyway

Have two cards. Keep one at home in a safe place and drill a hole through the one in your wallet. If the bank wants your card, give them the undrilled one and lose the other.

I had the same thing happen just before xmas. Had been spending so went into to check the balance and there was a series of Vodaphone transactions. Meant we had to use cash for the rest of our shopping as we waited for replacement cards. This was a fairly novel way of shopping. Took me back to yesterdays.

We now have 2 different accounts with a card on each one so if there is a problem with one you can use the other one .
