Tech us codgers have to think about ??

I mean I'm sitting in RV on a station in Pardoo WA. Way the hell over here .. Yet with in seconds I post this I can get a reply . If I told someone about this 10 - 20 years I would be laughed at . Especially if I said it would be sent from phone the size of a small note book .. I've had my engine race tuned in Sydney and the ECU tuner is in Abidabi hooked up via Skype . Our grandchildren take this tech for granted ..

Technology is what happens in the private sector. Bureaucracy is what happens in the public sector.

In July we'll all still be voting with paper and pencil and some idiot will lose our ballot paper. AISI, we should be able to vote from wherever we are, and a computer should be able to count our votes, just as we can pay our bills by phone or Internet.

True, Dorian. I have long advocated that we should be voting at the local TAB Shop by marking a ticket, similar to betting on a horse or dog.

The public would know the result by 6.05 PM on the day of the vote. Surely it can't be that hard.

Please let them keep to pencil and paper. The above mentioned will cost us as tax payers too much. Firstly they'll need to set up a committee, the members will have weekly meetings to establish their pecking order, then they would travel the world; first class; on a fact finding tour. Need I continue........? To cut a long story short the end result will be a balls up anyway. biggrin

Every eligible elector would have a Medicare card. Each card could be assigned a PIN. That's all one would need to vote by phone.

Of course that would give the election night analysts nothing to do.

Great post AK.. Hope you are well.

When I was a kid my Dad would take me to the local RAAF base to watch the aircraft, in those day they had one propeller, two wings and a very slow progress from east to west. In later years the yanks let us look at the F101, now that was a fast mover, silently moving over us then its sound would follow. Then the Mirage, F4E, and the F111 and FA18.

Now we have monster aircraft that can carry a few tanks or a helicopter of so. I for one, love technology the computer was a science fiction 60 years ago as was going to the moon etc. As far as voting by internet is concerned... yeah the others have said it well.

Cheers guys

Hi all;

Are yes how things have changed, some for the better and other thinks, well the old version was a lot better.

I can remember, when we got our first B/W television in the early 60's. Valve radio's of the type that were a console model and took up pride and place in the main parlor ( lounge room ) and cost more than a years wages. The first stereo's  and that warm valve sound that now has done a complete about turn and is popular again, if you can aford them. Now people have MP3 players of one form or the other.

What about man landing on the moon in the late 60's. i was still at school and the school shut down for a couple of days while the landing took place, every one was glued to the television , no color in those days, just B/W ( aussie only , but the yanks had color tv from about the same time ).

Who had a 'trannie' when they were young and ran of of say a 9 Volt battery, or even a valve radio that also ran of built in batterys. One or two batterys for the high voltage ( 90+ Volts ) and a seperate battery for the filliments ( 1 &1/2 ~3 Volts ).

Did every one relise that we have had color television in Australia for over 30 odd years now, no remote controle in the early days, on had to get of their back side to change the channels, thankfully we only had 3 channels in the early days CH 0 had not even started up then ( later change frequencys to channel 10 ). Not the cluster of channels that we now have.

Video recorder for home use who had a philips N1500 video recorder, this was up graded to the N1700 long play, what about the stand off between beta and vhs video recorders ( vhs won )

As for music, 78,45,and the newer 33.3 disks, then along came tape, reel to reel stuff and that was followed by cassette tape. CD's started to make a inroad in the early 80's. Mini disks also started to take off, but was mainly used for the radio stations, while not big in Australia did and still has a strong following.

Remember the first computers, i think the very first used all valves and took up several rooms in a building and if memory serves me right was used as a code breaker during the end of the second world war. Nower days every man and his dog has one of one sort or the other.

Automotive also took off, 3 on the tree was the way to go and automatic transmittions were a long way off. Power brakes, and now abs systems on cars are standard. Air con in cars, now standard. Same with power windows or central locking.

Jumped into a current model commadoor yesterday, had keyless entry and providing you had the kes on your , just hit the start button and away you go!!!, gone are the days of the cars that had a key for the ignition and a seperate pull button to ingauge the starter.Old school!!!

Yes in the last 100 odd years man has come a long way, it's scary stuff to have to weight and see what the next 100 years will bring.

I remember putting the microphone from a tape recorder in front of the radio to record a song. Now I just hook up a tiny little device (iPod) to iTunes on my poota and I have 1000 songs in about 30mins if I wanted them.

TV...I was lazy, as I had a remote control. It was a bit if 1" dowel long enough to reach the TV with a slot cut in the end to turn the dial. At the end of the night I would just push the off button with the dowel. Lazy hey!

I often think what it will be like when my grandkids are in there 60's. I'll never know cos my glasses will be melted where I'll end up.

Apparently we can vote online when you are a traveller or have a silent vote status. I applied for a "silent" vote due to being on the road full time.
A lady from ATO rang me about 4 days after submission online and said I can vote absentee in Kununurra (that's where I will be for a month come Julyhouse sitting). She also said she would mark my file as a nomad and anything happens that I cannot vote I will not get a fine.
My last known voting address was in NSW. However, When NSW had their last election, I was allowed to vote online. (possibly because it was a state election not federal)

This is the reply from ATO:
Your enrolment form has been received by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC). Your receipt number is EN-3QJXWJN7Z4 You have received this message as a result of an online enrolment transaction with the AEC. We will make every effort to process your enrolment within three working days. You can check your current enrolment details online at www.aec.gov.au/check If you did not submit this transaction, your email address may have been provided in error. If this is the case, please email info@aec.gov.au or call 13 23 26.
cheers
Terry

Hello everyone

Yes technology has come a long way

I can remember when back in the day, the tin can and string telephone was the bees knees

I do agree that electronic voting could be the way forward, but I would prefer not to have it
I am not convinced that mankind could be trusted, not to manipulate the voting outcome

The website below is just one of many random sites, which show that it is possible to rig an election, using computer voting

theres a bit of a battle going on in the Letters to the Editor in the WA newspaper, The West Australian.

A young Gen Y wrote (no doubt an email or tweet) to that page about 2 weeks ago saying that Gen Ys were smart, intelligent, had invented and made all the technology we use today, socially fantastic, good looking, had money, travelled more and blah blah. Then she (yep, she gave her name and address, which wasn't published of course) went on to say older people (older than Gen Y) were a waste of space, dumb, broke, ignorant, hadn't travelled and so forth.

Needless to say, it attracted a lot of response (none supporting her funnily enough). One responder pointed out that it was the older generations that invented and made the technology she thrived on today, made the world a generally better place for her generation - money, education etc and that we might not be as educated as her because we worked all our lives.

I'd say her letter (txt, email, tweet, twit or wotever) only goes to show she is less educated, less worldly and in all, not very smart....

I've said on this forum somewhere before I don't have a tech. bone in my body but I do have my old laptop and pay my bills on line, surf the net for information, enjoy Pick This Place and seeing the photos that everyone has posted etc. As for elections - the March local government elections done on-line in that the people came into the polling booth with their little card or letter with the barcode which was scanned by the issuing officer using a laptop or people's names were typed in on the laptop, but then paper ballot papers were issued. At our council elections they trialed electronic counting machines which didn't work. There were 5 local councils trialed with these. Guess what, these new you beaut machines counted the folds in the paper as a vote so then people had to employed to count the votes. That's one technology that needs some fine tuning. Anyway I worked at a polling booth which was a nice little pay packet for the day. Hope to do the same for the Federal election too and then we have a local state by-election two weeks later. I know there are IT jobs etc with technology but so many people were/are put out of work by it. Not everyone is an academic wiz and factory jobs and labouring jobs and do you remember telephone exchanges so many people worked in these etc. Anyway, it is a different world now and I can't imagine what it will be like for my little granddaughter when she reaches my age.

Hey Bruce, tech stuff aside, if it wasn't for us older generations the younger generations wouldn't be around!! So the young so-and-so who wrote in to the paper must have forgotten this. The young gen y's needed us older gen-whatevers to make them exist! Are we still a waste of space? I wonder how'd she respond to this.

I am 65 and I remember it was a treat to have dinner in bed and listen to dad & dave, the biggles story on the radio. We had an outside toilet until I left home. I walked from mc kinnon to Ormond school from very young. You would not do that now in case some mongrel stole your child. My brother and I used to collect the beer bottles early until the rubbish man chased us. We got a lot of pocket money back in those days.

Technology is wasted on Gen Y. They have true high fidelity 20Hz-20kHz sound systems but all their content is 20Hz doof-doof-doof. They have multi-GHz, multicore CPUs with multi-GB RAM, multi-TB storage, and multi-Mbps broadband, but all they use it for is to chat on FaeceBook and store porn and stolen multimedia. If the international literacy and numeracy results are any guide, then Australian Gen-Y-ers are getting dumber and dumber as their iThings are becoming smarter and smarter.

We LOVE camping in places where there is no reception of any kind. We're over listening to ''oldies'' yelling at the top of their voice ''it's us again, we're camped somewhere, wouldn't have a clue & we'll ring you tomorrow''. We feel sorry for their relatives having to put up with their everyday phone calls!

Having spent a lifetime fixing computers for a living and being gifted with looking about 20 years younger than I am, It cheeses me when some newly early retired person tries to justify their ignorance by saying something like "listen sonny, when I was your age we didn't have computers, or mobile phones, or ......."

To which I reply "sorry darlz/mate but I am old enough to be your dad, and yes they did have computers even well before you or I were born. They had and used them during WW2 to calculate shell trajectories. They even had mobile phones in the mid 70's that you carried around in a suitcase. In Australia they had the dialling prefix 007. The cellular network we still use today was invented by a company I worked for called Alcatel, in France, in the early 80's. That's 25 years ago. Did you never watch Get Smart or Star Trek on TV? Where do you think they got those tech ideas from? Real life not made up stuff. You probably carry communicator in your pocket a thousand times more powerful than what Kirk carries around on the enterprise. The problem is you and many others of your generation failed to pay attention to the advance of technology until it bit you in the @rse and now that you are an old dog, learning new tricks is getting harder for you. But keep at it, because if I was making a living out of computers before you were born, your generation can certainly learn to use them."
