Storm

G'day All, on a recent trip we were camping at the Police Paddocks in Rutherglen, Vic and at 2am all hell broke loose. Thunder and lightning seemed to be all around us and very, very violent. Then came the rain it was like someone with a hammer beating on the roof. We have experienced these storms in the past but nothing like this. Just wondered if other posters have had similar experiences? By the way, purely as an adjunct to the story, the 6 year old Jayco Sterling stayed perfectly dry throughout, but did get a bit of a rock up going at times!

I and a few others have been in some pretty bad storms at Greens Lake, just down the road from there really. Two had 100kmh winds and heavy rain. Most there survived the day, just a couple of war wounds.

Biggest trouble can be get out after the storm , The ground can get very boggy and get stuck, Also can be a risk camping beside a a stream and have flash flooding and can't get out.

Way back at a club rally at Dalgety 20 of us were hit with hail. One older van was hit so badly that it was a write off. I was in a large marquee at the time, the hail produced large dints in the roof. The creek behind us ran a banker and washed the old bottle dump behind the pub down through the park.

Dougwe,

I stand duly admonished for my failure to read your missives and will make it a priority in future. Please make allowances for my age!!!

West Beach in Adelaide in about 1990 was the worst storm I've encountered. Tipped several vans over, ripped annexes off vans, and destroyed nearly all tents. We had to wind our Jayco camper trailer down and I slept on the floor with my son. Wife and daughter slept in the car. Worse than the worst I've encountered on Philip Island.

There was a group of Girl Guides whose tents were totally destroyed. The girls either moved into the toilet / shower block or got billeted out in vans that were holding up.

Then wife & I went back there in September about 8 years ago but this time stayed in a motel. First night storm of similar intensity hit again doing similar damage. Press were saying worst storm since 1990. Don't think I'll try "3rd time lucky". Next day massive hail storm, one of the heaviest ever in Adelaide and about the only one ever in September. To top off the trip, we run into a snow flurry on the Western Highway from Trawalla to Miners Rest. First and only time I've driven in snow other than a bit of sleet. Very eerie. Cars off in paddocks everywhere.

just had a week at Halls Gap and the same storm went thru there, had to put the awning away during the night, strong winds rain and hail
Many tents, annexes and awnings and gazebo's destroyed.
Many trees broken all over the place, pretty scary

Yep. I was in Halls Gap when the storm came through. Not fast enough to get the awning down. Lost the lot. No damage to the van though. On a mission to replace it before we head up to Kununurra on the 26th.

Sarge. Saw a rig like yours at Broken Hill earlier this year. There were two travelling together. Was one you?
