tyre safety

Looking for more advice have a  2010 hiace van tyres have done 40000km since new still plenty of tread .. have read that the shelf life of a tyre is 7 years !   Should I be considering changing to a new set of tyres ?

To some people it may seem like a crazy question to be asking but better to be safe than sorry when planning that big trip around oz !!

7 years is about the limit especially single axle. I didn't believe in tyre age. Till some time back I lost two tyres on same axle . Tyres where over 20 year old though . Being there importance in safety ? I would replace them ..

The tyres on my 3 ton van are now 8 yrs old and still have legal tread depth. I don't know where this idea of chucking out good tyres came from but if they are legal keep 'em! I hear  so many nonsense, happy hour stories that are just stupid. Just do your daily visually check to make sure there are no cracks in the sidewall. Evan if there are keep an eye on them and stick to the bitumen and were them buggers out.Cheers Kevin

The rubber goes hard . I didn't know how old they were , just went by tread . Tyre people tell me and manufacturers including insurance companies . There is a time limit on safe tyres . In my case the tread just fell off the case .. I had only owned the vehicle a few months ..

Tyres carry a four digit code on the sidewall indicating the week & year of manufacture. For example; 2503 means the tyre was manufactured in the 25th week of 2003 or 1114/ 11 week 2014.

I wear the tyres out. No need to worry about age.

I think that is the best way, means that you have been on plenty of trips.

Good luck
