1991 Mazda T 3500 4 cylinder diesel motorhome. Big problem.

G'day.

Under the drivers seat rests the alternator. Attached to the back of it is the vacuum pump for the vacuum hydraulic brakes.

We have just finished 4 months in WA with Blazeaid, and left to go to N/W Qld; to help with the drought fencing. All was going well, until the bright red warning dash light came on. No vacuum.

The bus is more than capable of stopping without the vac. assist, but it would be nice to have it working.

I have enquired in a couple of mechanical businesses, but most of the young staff have no idea what I'm talking about. Does anybody know where I can buy a pump unit to suit.

We will be in Kalgoorlie for several days. After that we will be travelling to Qld. via the Desert Highway.

Regards.

Pipes

Howdy Pipes,

See if you can get onto Ashdowns Electrical somewhere. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news ....but most likely you will have to replace the unit as a whole...ie...alternator as well.

The same thing happened to a M8,s TD42 Nissan ....and he had to replace whole unit.

Also give Burson,s Parts a go as well....but any good auto leccy will get you sorted.

Good luck n enjoy the playground...our turn is just around the corner.

Cheers  Keith

Hi Pipes
Have you checked the piping & connections from the pump to the vacuum tank & from tank to ,Clutch & brake master cylinders for cracks or loose fitting . ?
It does not take much of a leak to loose the vacuum & if original the hoses are 25years old!!

I had the same thing on my old Nissan 4.2 natural aspirated diesel and just replace the paddles for want of the technical term inside the vac pump and a seal as it was whistling rather noisily and was done by the auto elect where you would go to get the alternator rebuilt

Hi,

I would first check the hoses and fittings as suggested by oldtrack 123. If it happened quickly this is likely to be the problem. If not then the vacuum pump can be easily rebuilt as Woody said. Dirty but easy biggrin It is on the back of the alternator as you know. Parts may be a problem but they are low tech stuff really, so cut up some old boots or the like for the vanes.wink

Hi pipes,
just had the same thing on my 1980 cruiser. The vanes were fine on mine but the shaft was stripped so new unit needed. Cost $375 for new 80amp alt and pump, l fitted it myself. If yours only needs new vanes most auto elecs should be able to get them. As Jaahn said very low tech.

God bless, froggos

And let us know how you went with this Pipes.

What was the fix??

Could it be repaired without replacing alternator..etc etc.

Cheers  Keith
