Karumba fishing

Please Grey nomads can you go easy on the fish at Karumba and only take what you can eat and not fill up freezers full and be greedy, there will be no fish left soon in a great place and then we know who too blame..........................

I see that your a young Pup and if you used that grey matter just a little you would realize that the pillaging of all rivers up north is mainly done by groups of mates/workmates on that once a year trip, I have witnessed this on the Limmen Bight several times. 99% of grey nomads do not tow boats, carry household freezers and 12kva generators, so please young Pup do a little research before barking up the wrong tree!

Obviously the large numbers of retired people we saw in Karumba in 2014, speaking about their regular fishing trips, and lack of fish for their freezers were workmates on annual leave. My mistake!

I am sorry Bauplenut, but I agree with Pup that much of the fishing pressure in popular areas of the north comes from retired people who visit places for 2 or 3 months to fill their freezers.

These people were based in the 3 caravan parks in town, and were quite open about the reason for their annual visit, expressing their upset that they were not "paying" for their trip in fillets.

Ian, just how are these retired nomads filling their freezers, is it the same as the Limmen Bight pillagers with illegal nets and fish traps made from weldmesh sheets? Bought in along with household chest freezers and large generators running 24/7 in the dry season. Or are they catching their bag limits? I know for a fact that Queensland Fisheries Officers are very strict on anything illegal.

When I went to Karumba the place was full of Victorians Grey nomads with freezers in annexe , It was hard to get into a caravan parks now the fish are gone and so are the Victorians grey nomads .

I have used the grey matter a little and seen it with my own eyes and as a few comments are agreeing with me, I just don't want the place fished out, Grey nomads need to think for the future as well.

Bauplenut,

one day with illegal nets and traps, or 3 months with daily bag limits as the sole reason for the trip, the outcome is no different.

The fact of the matter is that at Karumba, daily bag limit catches, combined with poor wet seasons, have affected the fish stocks.

The idea of paying for the trip with a full freezer is ridiculous, but a very common practice among the grey nomad set. All I heard was complaints that they weren't catching their limits, and the trip wasn't worthwhile. And yes, they all had freezers, but didn't need generators because they had powered sites! My experience reflects Brickies experience.

If you are a fisherman, you would be aware that the idea is to limit your catch, not catch your limit! No one needs a freezer full of fillets to take home, whether young or older!

Most grey nomads will only have a few years to go as far as their future is concerned so I'm sure they wouldn't want to think about it.

So in other words Pup & Ian you have absolutely no evidence but are assuming everyone has a boat goes fishing everyday to fill freezers full of fish, how do they then handle said freezers and transport them. I just find your stories to be just that stories!

No I have seen them at Karumba, I do not want to get into an argument, you know as well as I do they fish and catch more than enough to keep the rest is just being greedy, I am sorry if I struck a nerve with you but I have seen it for my own eyes and not alone as well. I really don't care what you think because there are many that share the same opinion as me, you have a nice day and chill.

G'day Pup. If who ever is catching the fish  remain within their legal limits all is OK. If they are breaking any legal limits report them to Fisheries or whoever monitors the rules. I and (hopefully)most others observe catch limits. Those who exceed legal limits deserve to loose anything used in catching those fish. That is the rule in NT now and it is being enforced. Those caught face a hefty fine and confiscation of vehicle/boat etc. They may be able to buy their vehicle etc back on top of their fine.

Of course the other option is to lobby Government to lower total possession limit.

Cheers

Does a possession limit come into force at all up there?
Over here in WA we have a possession limit of 20 kg per fisher all marked and labeled if traveling .

I was recently in the NT, and they have bag limits and you have to have the skin on your fillets, and dates caught. They also crushed a blokes tinny with a backhoe who broke the rules.........
