Probable Itinerary

G'Day All,

We have sat down and nutted out several itineraries for our upcoming trip.

This one is number 3 and may yet change again. So we depart Boronia on 9th may

and go to Euroa, Cobram,Berrigan Urana Narrandra,West Wyalong,Forbes,Molong,

Dubbo, Gilgandra, Gulargambone,Coonamble,Walgett, Dirrinbandi, St,George,Moonie,

Kingaroy,Bundaberg,Rockhampton,Sarina,Bowen,Charters Towers,Hughenden,Julia Creek,

Cloncurry, Mt.Isa,Camooweal,Barkly Homestead,Three Ways, and then wend our way to Darwin.

Haven't worked out stopping points up to Darwin yet. We aren't fully geared up for low cost camping,

but will take the porta potty and shower tent. A small 35AH battery to run the lights and gas for the rest.

When we get to Darwin we have to decide to go East or West. We have given ourselves 6 -7 months

all up. We zig zag a bit and 2 places we have to visit, Bundy as great friends are there and Rocky to visit the son

and grandkids,"G'day Son, here for a week what's for tea." We think we have enough time to potter and see

many new things and experience this fantastic country of ours. Whadda ya reckon?

Peterpan

Darn missed Mackay.

Have done Belgrave to Bundy pretty much the same route but didn't do the hot springs at Narrabri which was an oversight.

Have a great trip and be safe.

If you are only going to do that trip once I suggest you add in Winton, Boulia to Mt Isa. It is just wonderful thru there I reckon. But whichever way you go, have a safe and happy trip. Cheers Colleen

Pretty much done all those roads with a camper trailer, caravan or on a motorbike. Get fuel whenever you can and make sure everything is tied down &/or locked when you get out of your vehicle at fuel stops, wherever that may be.

All been good. Some parks have the park dog that comes to greet you. Barkly Homestead had a horse.

Just because it's a nice warm sunny day in Mt.Isa, it doesn't mean that the swimming pool at the park is actually warm.

Gulargambone caravan park is a "must stop" on your journey. One of the most friendly parks I have ever visited.

Mount Bundy Station, at Victoria River is a great place to stop - they have powered or unpowered sites - the unpowered ones are down below the powered area, but you can use the amenities, and the pool at half the cost. Had some friends stay there, on our recommendation, and they didn't want to leave!

Hello Peterpan

As you are going through Three Ways, then Tennant Creek is only about 24 kilometres south.
Well worth a look, for the extra mileage, if you had never been there before.

Agree with comment on Gulahgambone.

If you intend to avoid Townsville you could turn left at Giru, but I think you would miss something worthwhile.

Richmond is nice and so is Winton but it is hard to include both without some back-tracking.

Zig zags and detours are good.

Love your planning, but remember,  plans should be made to change at a minutes notice. Also love lobbing up to the kids and expecting tea. Have fun.

Thanks to all for your great replies.

Ame25, Last year we went to Winton,Longreach and Mt Isa and Lightning Ridge.

Geeco, Gulargambone is a return visit as it is a great place and the happy hour is fun.

Jules47, Mount Bundy will go on the list, thanks.

Tony Bev, Yup, Tennant Creek will be on the list also.

InTransit, Loved Townsville when we visited last and will be going again next year.

Dunmowin, We are prone to going off the planned itinerary every now and then.

Daly Waters pub is a must see on your way to Darwin. i also recommend Bitter Springs at Mataranka as well worth a visit. ( i thought Bitter Springs was much nicer than Mataranka Homestead for thermal pool )

Thanks JackieP, As yet we haven't organised where we go to after Three Ways,

but all these suggestions are great and are going in the itinerary. Is 7months going to be long enough?

IMG_1948.JPGJulia Creek has an excellent Free Campsite. The council even provides free push bikes to ride into town - only a kilometre at most. Once a week they have a $10 Meal and provide a bus to take the free campers to it. Here is the camp fire at the meal site.

we loved Camoweal, stayed at the Billabongs just over the bridge from the hotel( only a distance of about 2klm ). Its a great free camp but has no toilets or showers. Our porta potty was set up and our solar shower but on first day and a trip to the pub we found out that for a small fee we could use the showers in the pubs caravan park. Went straight back to our campsite and dismantled the solar shower and went to the pub daily ( gave hubby an excuse to go have a beer )

Daughter was working at Avon Downs about 10 years ago and went to the Camoweal Pub one day. Went into the lounge as the bar was full of blokes. Only women were Aboriginal and they all came over to talk to her. Were really friendly and interested. Wanted to know why she was there, where she was from. Were very chatty as not many (if any) white women actually visit the pub lounge.

I'd previously been thru Camoweal early afternoon on pension day. Busy, clean and local population all had a genuine smile on their faces. Not sure what it was like later that day. Probably not a lot of difference to pay-day and the old "six o'clock swill". Grew up in a industrial neighbourhood with a pub on every corner and most people walked or rode a pushbike.
