Looks more n likely we will be at Nana Glen this year for June long Weekend.
Don't really want to travel the varicose vein (Pacific Highway-coast road)...and was thinking of going inland to Coffs.
Now I have heard of landslips happening on the Waterfall way east of Dorrigo...so my question is ...does anyone here have an up-to-date info on the road down the mountain please???
Have towed our Goldstream camper both ways on it in the past...so our current van should present no problem if road is OK...just select lower gears.
I notice you are in Orange. I was planning a trip to Tweed Heads from Victoria next month and I generally have gone up the Newell / New England and down to the Pacific at some point. Google maps wants me to go to Cowra, Wellington, Dunnedoo, Tamworth. Is that road any good for pulling a 1600kg van?
Additionally, is there a quick / easy way to get to the Pacific Hwy from Orange / Bathurst other that what I've noted above and you are planning?
Late last year I came back from Coffs via Dorrigo, Armidale, Tamworth and then eventually down the Newell to Vic. Not impressed with Coffs to Armidale Road. Earlier this year I was camped with some people from Tenterfield and they said that was not one decent road from inland across to the coast. I did all the roads 25 years ago with a camper trailer and they were not good then.

I would agree that there is no decent Road to get from the inland routes to the Coastal Route. ie Newel to Pacific Highway.
I was driving down to Victoria an my 8.5 ton MH flat towing a Suzuki Grand Vitara from Brisbane to Melbourne starting down the Pacific Hwy.as far as Grafton and made the decision to take the Armidale route. Beautiful scenery but oh so winding and some very steep climbs and descents and some of the bends with 15 KPH advisory signs. A 100 K journey took over four hours along that route. Very glad I never met a vehicle coming the other way.

Did you go Grafton, Ebor, Armidale or Grafton, Glen Innes, Armidale? Google suggests I go via Ebor. Did via Glen Innes 25 years ago pulling a camper trailer and it was a nightmare. Sounds like you may have gone via Glen Innes as your description matches my memory of that road.

Mate the road is a bit windy but take your time and you wont have any trouble, we travel this road quite often, there are camps at Thora and Dorrigo showground if you want to have a look around, Dorrigo area is a nice spot to have a few days.

I did the road via Ebor. It was an interesting trip and would be great just by car. I wouldn't say I would never try that route again but I would try the Glen Innes Route next time and see what that route is like.
From Orange/Bathurst to the Pacific Highway you could travel via the Bylong Valley Way through Kandos, Rylstone, Bylong to Sandy Hollow. Then take the Golden Valley Highway through Singleton to Maitland and get onto the Pacific Highway at Hexham. A lovely drive with 2 steep and bendy sections but bitumen all the way and no heavy traffic
The road from Grafton via Coutts Crossing, Hernani then to Ebor is another road. Narrow in places and windy but a good drive all the same. My husband pulled our horse gooseneck down that way quite often and said he would prefer that way to the Dorrigo mountain road. Enjoy what ever way you decide. Happy travels.
