Read an article recently in the Age after the Shane Warne Foundation was accused of rorting the system . Legally the minimum amount that can actually go to the CAUSE that a charity says that it's helping is 4 cents in the dollar. In other words 96 cents can go in salaries, travel, long lunches, entertainment, bonuses etc. One charity that was supposed to be helping starving African kids took their whole staff over for a 2 week holiday & did a wildlife safari & a Mount Kilimanjaro trek as well as staying at luxury resorts, didn't go near the starving kids! After reading the article we USED TO DONATE TO CHARITIES.

I did a short stint setting up the Bond University on the Gold Coast quite a few years ago.
The attached Technology park had one tenant who toured primary schools getting kids to donate their dinner money to help save the Koala.
He was driving around in three different luxury cars to my knowledge. A Rolls Royce, a Supercharged Jaguar XJ12 and a Lamborghini Countach. Lunch at all the big expensive resorts on the Coast and he used to brag that the school kids were funding his lifestyle.
It's a Rort the Charity business and the genuine ones suffer because of the Iffy ones.
What about "Movember". Three guys Register the Name "Movember" and set up a separate charity and the charity has to pay the three guys Millions to use the name "Movember."
I agree with your comments, but we do like to give back to the community as well, so if one chooses wisely like Red Cross and the Cancer outlets, I would hope they would be ok. We work for these two I just mentioned and it is a worthwhile commitment. I guess when you have been touched with some of these horrific illnesses around you feel like you are helping in some small way.
I too will only ever donate to those few well known charities including the RFDS, which we've actually used ourselves on a couple of occasions. The other one I might mention as worthwhile is the Salvos. I volunteered for them for a while and after seeing and being involved in the great work they do in helping and supporting those in need, I am quite happy with the way they 'spend' their funds.

Absolutely right. Lots of good worthwhile charities doing the right thing
There are some great charities and there are many THOUSANDS of people who Volunteer their time and work tirelessly to help others.
It seems today that if you want a nice easy life you set up a charity and live the high life on expenses.
I personally think every registered Charity should have to publish the amount they take in and the amount they give out. Also the expenses and pay they spend on themselves.
If most organisations had an official independent audit and could show where the money has gone then Ok but between churches and charities a lot of tax dollars and foreign aid are going to a few while the aged and infirmed in OZ are having their few govt concession cut back.
The RFDS should be fully govt funded and not sold off to private enterprise in little bits at a time so no one will notice till it's all gone and the end user gets a bill for using the service .
As for medical research there are far too many researchers researching the same thing and not sharing their break throughs in the hope of reducing the delays in introduction of new treatments. There's a need to concentrate the efforts and hence the dollars to those making some type of head way, at the moment there are many trying to share a pot of gold and none are getting enough to make any headway to fixing anything . 5-10 Years from break through to main stream clinical introductions it's a laugh
