Jayco trailer Plug Wiring.

I am trying to trace wires in my van, and reading the literature, I think there is a mistake in the wiring instructions. Jayco's wiring of the twelve pin plug clearly says that pin 2 (black) is +12volts from the battery, however "Tow Secure" installation instructions (the breakaway unit used) says the black wire should be wired to the ignition source. The reason for this is that the self test module mounted in the vehicle, does a self test every time the ignition is turned on, while having the plug wired up as per Jayco's instructions means the self test is only done when the plugs are connected, and then the driver is not in the car to see the self test.

I am still unsure if the breakaway battery is charged via this wire, and if so it would probably pay to use a cross over relay because of the power draw.

Hi Ian,

Don't forget, Theres also the 240 AC charger some where, ours is mounted under our bed at the front, and you should charge the battery the day before as well.

Gday Iana, In NSW it is mandatory for all vehicles fitted with a breakaway unit and over 2t GTM (correct me if I am wrong) be fitted with a visual and audible warning device fitted in the towing vehicle. This is tested at the annual roadworthy or rego check. Yes the black wire is connected to the battery in the brake safe unit and it charges through the No 2 pin of your plug, providing your tow vehicle has power to No2. The breakaway units usually have a test button on the unit and when pressed a green light will operate if the battery is charged. There is spare wire not connecting to anything in many cases, usually purple emerging from the brake safe unit (Tucked away and sometimes difficult to find) and it is this wire that you wire up to travel back through your plugs to the monitor in the tow vehicle. If your vehicles are not NSW registered then you do not have to comply with the regulation I have heard that many people just wire the unit to their van battery.Have look at your unit and see if there is a test button or even read the booklet that should have come with the with the brake safe unit. Hope this is of help to you.

Just been reading on the net, sounds as if the hot wire to No2 pin on the vehicle should run through a relay activated by the ignition. No mention of this in the instructions though. No 2 runs the battery charger on the breakaway module and the ESC. system.
By having a relay, the power is cut each time the ignition is turned off, saving having a flat vehicle battery, but also causes the breakaway unit to do a self test each time the ignition is turned back on, which then registers with the wireless module mounted in the car giving 5 beeps to say all is OK.

Was the Jayco literature supplied with the van on delivery is it something that you gleaned from other sources? There are several diagrams for Jayco wiring. I have a handbook dated 2010 and the plug wiring in that version is as per the Australian standard with pin 2 as the reversing signal.

You are doing the correct procedure by working from first principles and chasing the wiring out with a meter.
