In Stanley, I saw today a scallop, prawn and cray mornay pie. $12.00, you had to wait 10 minutes while they warmed it up for you. Didn't get one (not lunch time) but might go back.
We are loving Tassie also.

There is a lovely free camp for self contained vehicles in Deloraine, right by the river if you are heading that way. Love Tassie, the only thing I don't like is the cost of the ferry!

If you are looking for a quiet free camp in northern tassie on the western shore of the Tamar River try Paper Beach between Gravelly Beach and Deviot or the boat ramp area at Gravelly Beach
Is it easy driving around Tassie? Yes, the roads are all good quality, but the state is "lumpy" many twisty, turny windy hilly roads
How was it putting your van on the Spirit?? Easy - the crew will guide you on
Did you go day trip or overnight?? overnight, with internal private use cabin
Are there many good free camping sites? yes - many, too many to mention
What is the price of fuel? currently between $1.12 & $1.18 depends on the fluctuation on the mainland, and city vs village/town
Prices of food? What sort of food do you refer to. The state is a modern state with Woolworths, Coles and IGA, take your pick. There is also the most beautiful produce, potatoes, apples and pears, berries - all depending on the season. Cheese & dairy products! Yum
I will be going in May and not sure for how long. I want to see some snow. (never have before)You will, I can guarantee it
Anything of interest ie old Ghost towns etc. Yes, do some research into what you want to see, we have been here for 6 months, plenty to see and do.

I realize that Tasmania is a modern State (should be - it was the first!).
It is a long way from the Mainland though and was thinking most things would have a hefty freight price put on it.
We spent 15mths in Tassie from 12/11 to 3/13 and after living in Cairns with freight/fuel/food/power costs we found it equal in costs for the same above listed to live in Tassie.
As for being Cold the Winter we spent doing A Housesit at Seven Mile Beach (Did Not live in the House) the Coldest we had was 3 x -2 degrees. While the same time in Shepparton Vic and Canberra they had -8 degrees. Yes it can get cold up higher or when the Westerlies are carrying the cold down to Launceston or associated areas. We were up Mt. Wellington at least 6 to 9 times to frolic in the Snow as does Most Hobartians.
We can't wait to return in a few years for a longer stay, absolutely Love Tassie.

Hi Helen - I am sure others will answer with up to date info - we spent four months in Tassy - November to March, we were at Bay of Fires on their hottest day (38c) - but the water is so cold they wear wetsuits to swim all summer!! We had snow on Cradle Mountain on 6th December, was the most fantastic day!!!
Apart from our liking for breakfasts out - we found the supermarkets generally well priced, and lots of markets and stall around for fruit and vege - best cherries in Lilydale - I can still taste them! Scottsdale is a great little town, Northeast Park on the edge of town is a great free camp, on a great park. Great shops and services in town as well.
We found fuel, though not cheap, but not much competition, so standard pricing all round - Coles/Woolies petrol vouchers are honoured,
Richmond Jail is a must see - if you don't feel the spirit in there I would be surprised - both times I have been there too.
Lots of free camping (or low cost) - a great place to go!

Hey Mezzie - how are ya goin? Thinking of heading to Tassy? You would only be classed as a car probably - so cheap, depends when you go, and whether or not you want a cabin. Fantastic place - you will love it!!!!!

Hello Helen, sorry I didn't get back to your questions, I am leaving Tassie 29th April. May will be cold, can have nice days cool nights, I have been using my hot water bottle already. Is affordable to eat here and travel here as towns are closer, is hilly in some parts. Tassie has hot showers in some camps like St Helens pay $2. St Mary's have hot showers $2, can walk to shops from camp. Just bring warm cloths Helen, enjoy Tassie, Patty.
