I am so confused.
On the one hand there is a thread here saying that no camping signs mean that you can camp for a few days and lots of grey nomads are quite happy to do this.
On this thread, how dare backpackers camp in a no camping area.
I am so confused??????????

~~~SNIP  WHAT CAN WE DO -  email councils to tell then the benefits of free camping, NOT THE NEGATIVES as we often focaus on.
Maybe we could start a campaign - THE ECONOMIC VALUE OF GREY NOMADS  and spread the word. Maybe have a tell the world how good we are month?
Any other ideas folks????
Gday...
Join CMCA ... they are VERY active ... aggressively active ... in the wider Strayan community pushing exactly that.
To be honest, they have shown they are very effective in achieving their aims. Think of them fondly each time you dump that black water in the blue hole.
However, whilst they actively highlight the "economic value" of GNs they also tell communities that these "economic valuables" want to stay for nothing - free - and that communities should (must?) provide these facilities - or lose the "economic value" of the "travelling wallets". No facilities and GNs will "vote with their wheels".
I wait to be howled down. However, it is a double-edged sword hmm ... GNs are held up as an "economically valuable" to the community .... but also that GNs want it all for free so we can be that "economic valuable".
No wonder communities (and the general public) are a little confused. no
Cheers - John
Too true John. We find councils (not all) reply to our emails and appreciate feed back when you stay in their area.
This is a more personal method than CMCA and ths is what I'm encouraging.
Cheers Baz
 There's already good information out there, it really just needs to be distributed or passed on to the relevant people, groups, clubs, businesses, government departments, councils, etc....
https://sites.google.com/site/freedomcampingaustralia/contact-us
A National survey was undertaken in 2015 on Freedom Camping in Australia, and the survey results are in. There's lots of info that can be downloaded from the above link including facts about Freedom Camping and the financial benefits that it creates for the towns visited.  Now that's done the task is now spreading the facts and figures that have been collected.  So, what can we do?  Simple, spread the word and get this valuable info out there!.
Yes that is great information and very informative and balanced. The question is who would read it if you sent it to a council. What I'm advocating is a personal email to councils (or similar approach that anyone can suggest) saying thanks or otherwise.
An email is much easier to read and act on IMHO.
We are currently stuck in a low cost community camp site in Tassie with  vehicle problems. The council has been fantastic and understanding and actually rang my wife to see how we were going and to advise we could stay as long as necessary. Great service and they will be told so before we go and by email how must we appreciate it. Maybe I'll post as well a new thread.
Just my thoughts.
Before anyone bothers to organise an Economic Value of Grey Nomads Awareness Campaign, just be aware that back packers contribute in excess of $4 billion per annum to the Australian economy as well as providing a valuable resource for our farmers during picking season.
Perhaps some of you over value your own current contribution to the economy.
 We are not talking about the "you" but the collective group of grey nomads. Isn't that what the forum is for.
I'm sure we all know the value of backpackers - it's in our faces almost daily and yes they do spend a lot of $ and need facilities/places to camp/rest etc.
