Are you covered?

Hi, this may have been put forward before. I have been a "total cover " member with RACV for a number of years, I recently had to renew my membership and speaking to the lady at RACV  found out I needed  "the tow pack" to cover my van because it's over a certain size. The extra cost was just over $50. I don't know the other roadside people have the same thing.

Cheers Owen.

Hi Owen

I am with the RACV as well and pay the extra , and I have road side assist with the new Isuzu MU -X, road side assist does not cover your van, they will tow it of the road into a safe place only, it is up to you to get it towed to where ever, so I will keep RACV  as well so the van is covered.

Had the same situation with the NRMA. Bought a new Navara recently and had to add it to my membership as Nissan Roadside Assist does not cover the van. Thought I was covered with NRMA Premium cover but found out it only covers vans up to I think 18'. Cost me around $300 to take out the Premium Plus cover so my 21' van was included.

For the first time ever, I went with RACQ Ultimate prior to my last trip thru SW Qld......   the Patrol, the Van & I are getting old, so I weakened and paid up for some 'insurance'/ roadside assistance that covered the 21'6" van too.

Fortunately didn't need it & I swap the cover from the Patrol to my town car (Mazda 3) on line   as required.

Mmm no I'm not covered as far as the van is concerned with my Isuzu roadside assist.

Looks like the better half will have to stay with the van in whatever "safe place" it is moved to until the tug is made functional. Hopefully that "safe place" is the nearest suitable caravan park. I guess I will worry about that one if and when it ever happens as I'm not real happy with the RACV and do not intent to ever give them any more money.

We had cause to use the RACV last trip as we had van trouble 100km north of Kalbarri WA. RAC WA couldn't help us with the van so they called the RACV for us, RACV called us in about 20 minutes, had a tow truck sent from Kalbarri to pick up the van, and arranged, and paid for, our accommodation in a Kalbarri Resort while we waited for the van to be repaired (Nearly a week). We think the RACV is pretty damn good! We'll be giving them our money for sure!
I can't say the same for CIL insurance, but that's another story!

I don't think this is a time to cut your nose off to spite your face ! Unless you are considering getting a new wife, I know which is the cheapest, just pay the extra.

seems of all the State motoring groups, WA's RAC is a poor last in terms of cost of policies, the cost of them and the service after sale. So may horror stories told to me, yet mainly great from the other States.......

You would think the RAC (national ) would make this clear to their customers.  I've been a RACV member for over 40 years so one would think they could work out that I'm retired  (or close to it ). Up graded to "total cover" for a reason  (touring Oz).

Cheers Owen.

In my understanding RACV Total Care membership WILL cover you and your van IF your van is under a certain length, width, height and weight etc. If your van exceeds any of these specifications then you need to purchase the "Tow Pack" in addition to your Total Care membership. This has only recently been introduced by RACV. I do not know what other motoring organisations have. By purchasing the additional Tow Pack option then RACV know that your van/motorhome etc cannot be moved/relocated by their standard means and they then hire an "external towing contractor " to relocate your van/tug as required.

Basically if your van is over the specifications for cover under just the Total Care package and you require towing the chances are that the towing company sent to recover you will not have the capability to recover your caravan/tug/motorhome.

See link below for further info on RACV Tow Pack. I will start a new topic to ensure all members of RACV are aware of this new option.

As I've mentioned in another topic even Total Care does not cover the van or a motorhome/bus.
Without a Tow Pack the van only gets towed if the car breaks down and the van deminsions are under a certain size.
However, if the van breaks down but the car is fine, you have no coverage because the Roadside coverage is for the car not the van.
If you have a motorhome or bus your roadside coverage does not include towing.

Tow Packs provide Van coverage for Van breakdowns when the car is still OK.

Tow Packs provide for towing for oversize vans, motorhomes and buses.
