G'day everyone. Am going on a Simpson desert crossing in May in my 100 series Landcruiser. It is fitted with three heavy duty Rhino Bars. I am looking at purchasing a basket or platform to go on top to carry a spare tyre, fuel, swags and whatever. Have been checking out what is available Need something around 1600 x 1100 or thereabouts. Trying to be economical and not have to fork out for the big name brands Would be keen to see what other GNs use and their thoughts on the cheaper imported types If you have photos that would be great Cheers ole fellas Daz
Daz hi, I am currently using the Rhino basket & having tried others would recommend the Rhino, certainly if You intend to use a few times on the type of roads leading to the Simpson. Have crossed numerous times Its roads leading to it that usually does the damage. The roof top mounting is as important as the basket. If Your bars are mounted to the factory fitted fore aft rail type would seriously look at replacing. My current vehicle had those & were useless went back to track type which IMO is the better way to go.
Surprisingly the weight as can be seen there amounts to about 140 kg when the two gerries are full which is above the recommended.
Bought a cheaper basket from Super Cheap and have had it attached to the Rhino roof bars for 12 years and thousands of outback kilometres, including a Simpson crossing. It has carried a spare tyre and two jerry cans and I can say I have never had a problem. I made sure I had the good quality Rhino bars to hold the basket.

Thanks for that The supa Cheap one is what I have in mind, as to what i can find so far.
Remembering that it is always a good idea to add extra weight high up on any vehicle. It really assists the vehicle dynamics in the event of an accident.
On this occasion I must agree with "The Phantom " not to mention messing badly with the fuel economy

I fitted three Rhino HD Roof racks, a Rhino extra large basket and 2m awning on my LC 200 GXL last year for a trip to the tip of Cape York. I placed a 8mm rubber mat under the equipment on the rack as a bit of protecting for both the rack and equipment.
I had no problems with either items. Wind noise can be annoying, but you must expect that.
I found the high sides to be an advantage in ensuring all items stayed within the confines of the basket.
Horses for courses . I would choose and recommend a basket again.
Happy Caravanning.
