Crazy Americans

I have just finished watching this weeks four corners and although I knew that Americans were gun crazy I had no idea how insane and easily manipulated their general public are when it comes to guns

Gun in homes in America are 40 percent more likely to kill a family member than a someone threatening the family they also have 9 children per week killed by other children who were playing with a gun.

There are Americans walking around shopping centres, picking up kids in playgrounds, eating in Restaurants all with guns in holsters hanging down their leg, how absolutely insane is that.

There is now a movement arguing that all teachers should be armed and in some schools they are providing body armour for all children in the school just in case another mad gunman decides to visit the school.

I just went out and checked the calendar in the kitchen no it's not the first of April so it's not a four corners practical joke, but I certainly think Americans who are gun crazy are certainly a sad joke.

I am so so glad that I live in Australia where the Government acted and put laws in place that make it illegal for the average joe who does not have a legitimate reason to own a gun.

Scary numbers there AT, like you I am glad to be an Aussie............but I am sceptical about the future.

Although we spent five weeks in USA and did not see anything remotely like a gun..........must have visited the right spots

We were camped in Southern Florida one time. 20 odd years ago, when we were living and working in the States, and at happy hour the topic of "who was carrying" came up. Out of the 16 couples at happy hour, management and I were the only couple who were not travelling with some sort of gun

D and D,

Really interesting comedian, made so much sense even the American audience got the point and didn't argue. Maybe Obama should have employed him.

I am married to one of your so called crazy Americans. We lived in Florida for a number of years! Florida is a "right to carry State" Not all States in the U.S.A have the same firearm laws, so unless you are in those States, you won't see the guns. In Florida, as in all " right to carry States" you must not conceal your firearm, this is why you will see the holsters carried. Unlike Australia, America has always had guns & most people do! Australia is a completely different culture so I sure would not like to see the same here. But having said that I have grown up in the country where most rural people do have guns. But because they have been a part of the landscape there is a respect for firearms that unless you have lived you would never understand. It is a sad fact that people die all over the world every day from the use of firearms. In Australia two of our biggest killers are drugs & alcohol. I would have to think that a lot more people die from alcohol & drug abuse then what die from guns. One thing I know for sure, if you are living in a right to carry State in the good old U.S.of.A you sure have a lot less chance of having someone crawl into your window at night to rape your sleeping Daughters.

Just looking up the Rape statistics for Florida  here they are saying 1 in 6 women have reported being raped.  This is in a state where the right to carry a gun should keep this figure low.

I am interested to see how the figures add up in countries that don't have such lenient Gun Laws.

If it is one in six women in Florida,   where the availability of personal firearm protection theoretically should  keep this statistic low.  What is the rate  here in Australia, the UK  or NZ.  Where firearms are more controlled and not that available. Are more women raped   in these places because of the lack of guns   !

Come on you statistically minded  mathematicians   can you come up with the official statistics for a comparison.

Prevalence According to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, 2010*

(1): Women: 1,266,000 women in Florida have been raped at some point in their lives. Thats 17% or 1 in 6 women in Florida.

41.8% of women, or 3,111,000, in Florida have been victimized by sexual violence other than rape.

If you want to research stats you might want to look at this one. You don't have to look too far these days to find the horrors of crime. Try your own backyard, you might be shocked to see that things are not quite as rosie here as you would like to think. I wonder how many more women in the States would have been raped or murdered if they didn't have the right to protect themselves.

Protection for Women has to always be a high priority and so it should be, otherwise we will see many more people carrying guns just so they can protect themselves from people carrying guns, more children may well be accidently shot by mums, dads, sisters or brothers gun although they are very safe if they visit my family as none of us own a gun and we all respect women, men and children.

Statistics can be used to say what ever you want them too but pictures of a five year old little girl crying because her father is making her fire her own rifle certainly says it all for me.

I dont believe all Americans are gun crazy but there are certainly a significant number who believe in their right to bear arms
