Yes. I think the dirt started about 80ks out of Windorah. Any how it is 260ks of gravel road. There are a few patches of tar mainly over the sandhills. Just make sure your spare tyre is good. The service station in Birdsville does a roaring trade. The condition of the gravel road depends on when it was last graded. Just take it easy and drive to the conditions. Went about a week before the races not too bad. Dreadful after the races with heaps of vans, trucks and busses coming and going. My Transit van did it with no mishaps, but I won't go again its too hard on the vehicle.

We did the road from Windorah to Birdsville with a normal van with no real problems and no tyre problems.. There were some rough spots but if you drive to the conditions you should be fine. The road out of Birdsville to Bedourie was worse but did have some bitumen and there were road works happening. We did it in early July just before the big bash at Big Red. Make sure stop for a drink at the old pub at Middleton.
