Drilling holes in interior van walls

Hi Folks.  I have a Supreme Executive which has interior walls that are shiny, white smooth.  I doubt its gel, but possibly a laminate based board.

The pelmet across the sliding door into the en-suite is slowly coming loose.  I cant see how it is attached other than a 5cm square runner on its inside with a heap of screws into the ceiling through the runner. Because the gap between the pelmet and door is so narrow, I cant see how the runner is apparently holding the pelmet square and firm (and its doing neither).

Obviously Ive tightened all the screws, but it seems the pelmet it only glued to the runner board.

Much to the BOSSES disgust, I want to use small chrome L brackets to screw into the end of the pelmet and the wall where it meets.  The brakets and screws only need to be small - just sufficient to hold the pelmet firmly against the ceiling and at right angles.  I think I will put a bracket at each end and one in the centre into the ceiling.

My question is, can I safely drill into what I assume is laminate board without splitting it or causing crazy cracking.  Then I will use small screws through these holes.  The pelmet is just light "timber" and so I don't expect problem drilling into that

Hi Bruce & Bev,

Sorry to here your van to is falling apart too.biggrin  We haven't left the driveway yet and our Jayco  van has lost two screws out of cuboard doors.crycrycry

Getting back to your issues, try a 1mm pilot hole then up the drill bit to match/ so there is clearance so the screws don't apply pressure to the laminate the diameter of the screw your wanting to use. I would even try a reamer bit ( Test First in an area out of site). You don't want to go past the laminate which will only be 1-1.5mm thick. Use  quality drill bits, not the used ones that your grandfather left you.smile

IMO, If I were doing what you are wanting to do, I would clean the area with methylated sprites / Turps first, and use Maxi Bond Extream construction adeheive to fix the brackets to the laminate.Tough as nails, cleans / wipes up with water no mess and the little lady will be happy again. @ $7 or so, for a 350g tube for a chalking gun. from the big green shed.

Regards Jim & Lambie

Agree with Jim, Bruce. That "shiny board" is paper thin ply wood and it and screws are big enemies. I would screw but glue as well, that way the screw holds the bracket in place for you.

Maybe you could glue a bit if quad beading the full lenght if the CEO is not impressed with the bracket idea.

HI, everyone needs a tube of this glue, similar to Silicone and a 1000 times stronger, it will not let go and sticks to anything, about $14.00 at some hardwares

I have had some issue with door on RV.. There's little magnets that hold screen together when opening..
The screws pulled out.. So found some 3 ply, cut 20 X 20 and sikoflexed to door with small stainless screws in each
corner . Left it over night and refitted magnets with centre screw and a little Sikoflex.. Done..
