Solar

i have just bought a 1992 Viscount Overlander pop top. There is provision for a battery which was apparently previously connected. I want to connect battery and charge with solar panels through an Anderson plug. Can anyone help me as to how I go about this. Thank you

Hi Lynne

It all depends what you want to do with it
Are you only going to use it for lights or do you want to run a fridge on 12 volt
there are so many questions
You doing to right thing by asking what you have to do
But first we want to know what your plans are
How more you ask to more you will learn

Cheers John

 Hi Steely biggrin,

Others have asked for more info but I will say to start, the basics are a deepcycle battery, a solar panel or more, AND a regulator/controller mounted close to the battery and some appropriately sized wiring between these items and also to the items which you wiil need to power.

Now the actual size etc of all these may be answered better after your information that you will give us. But be generous sizing things to allow for expansion etc. Power is addictive so people usually want MORE and MORE as they go along. The old wiring may be a bit marginal in the van so throw it if necessary as wires are cheap and paying for solar panels and loosing the power in crap wires and resistance is really silly. a common mistake too !!

Search the forum for answers and ask question too before you start, like you already have.aww Also there are cheaper items available on fleabay and expensive items available from the camping suppliers, your choice. I have used fleabay for my stuff for years with success and good savings with wise shopping.

Cheers jaahn

All there is right now is a negative and positive connection coming from the van to the boot. I want to run the frig, a couple of lights and recharge an iPad and phone. I have gas cooking. There is a hole in the bottom of the boot to run whirring through. I have room for 2 batteries. I was hopping to run the batteries and regulator in the boot and then connect car and solar panels through Anderson plug. I am planning initially to do 1-3 month stints and then want to do Kimerlies, Kakadu, Broome etc. Top end also on the list, not sure if rig will do that. The DMax is Ok. Thanks for all you help.

Hi Lynne

More questions biggrinbiggrin

What type of fridge do you have??

3way ( gas/12volt/240volt)

Or you going to get a 12 volt/240 volt one Compressor Car Fridge??

Lights don't use much but if you have still them bulb type please change them to led they use a fraction of the power

to charge an Ipad or phone wont take that much power at all

Cheers John
