1988 Toyota Coaster Radiator Cover

I was just under my motorhome and found a vinyl retractable blind on the bottom of the radiator, it has a cable up the top which when pulled rolls a black vinyl blind up and covers the front of the radiator. Can anyone tell me what this for, I was thinking being an import it may be something to do with driving in snowy conditions to stop the radiator freezing or something ??

On checking Google there are several references - but it seems that in older European cars they were fitted as the constant fan continuously pulled cold air through, but on modern cars the fan is regulated and doesn't activate until optimum temperature has been reached. There are some photos on the attached link.

Yeah that's what it is, it's factory fitted coming from Japan, I saw something similar on Ice Road Truckers..lol. Don't think I'll be using here in Australia but always good to know what it's used for..

H i J & K.

The blind could be very useful at times for when park up of a night. I will try to explain.

Back a few years ago I made a delivery in Armidale up in the New England area in the middle of winter temp sud zero I was there all night next morning about 6am after unloading my trucks motor would not start, I even tried to roll start it but failed, so I rang a truck mechanic he arrived ran a butane torch over my injector lines to unfreeze the diesel. Bingo truck started.

Now he went on to explain that diesel fuel has wax in it which at sub 4 will congeal, most fuel in the colder areas have winter addiattitive in it though the winter months but I had refueled on the coast with non addiattitive fuel.

No long after this I had this truck full time running from Sydney to Albury then return, park up at about 9pm restart at 7am to return now where I parked faced south down the street towards Mtn Buffalo and the snow fields, the wind would fairly whistle up the street causing grief once again in the middle of winter, from then on I would put a binld, a sheet of cardboard up in front of the radiator, no more problems.

That blind the coaster has could be handy in winter when you park up but the real reason it there is to help warm the motor up to get to operating temp quicker and also by adjusting the blind in winter the motor will stay warmer. I doubt whether it would get much use hear in Australia but you never know.

Hope this is of some help.
