we are setting off on our long awaited trip at the end of this month. Would like to visit Kangaroo Island. Does anyone have thoughts about accommodation on the island. Should we take our motorhome or leave it on the mainland and stay in a hotel and how long should we stay there? Thank you for your help.
I would definitely take the Motorhome. Depending on your interests the main attractions being natural surroundings particularly the western end National Park and the Eastern end beautiful coastline and Seals. Fishing is well catered for and attractions such as the Sheep dairy a really interesting and worth a look. There are various places to camp however do not rely on water even if information says it is available. We stayed for five days and stayed in C/Parks on two nights however each place that was listed as having water available had empty water tanks and that was not at a dry time like now. Things may has changed in that regard now. Go and enjoy, Good Luck. Allen
I agree with "Footprints" - expensive crossing but we were glad we took our van across as it allowed us to stay as long as we wanted. Finished up staying for two weeks and loved every minute. Just so different to other parts of Australia. Had we done what we originally planned of staying in paid accommodation for 3 days, it would not have done the place justice. Take your time, enjoy the scenery, fishing, walks, bike rides, seafood - great place.
We have just booked to take the ute and van to KI [as they call it]. Costs is high, we booked for two weeks. To stay in units for two weeks would cost a hell of a lot more. Plus we would have to put the van in storage on the main land.
Friends ,who have been their told us a week is not enough time to have a good look around.
To book a large van, phone Sealink, can not be booked online.
A favourite place to visit for me. Try to get as close to nature as you can while there but there's little in the way of free camping.
last time there I stopped for lunch at a vacant picnic table near a river mouth somewhere, cant recall the name of the place but I won't forget the event. The single table was fenced off for good reason...to keep the native and wild animals out ! And Out they came looking for scraps of food. It was a zoo in reverse! The fence didn't stop the birds, fantastic.
